Explosion proof mobile phone for Banagas

Banagas, the Bahrain National Gas Company, turns the associated gas from the Bahrain Field, and off-gas piped from the Sitra refinery, into sales gas, propane, butane and naphtha. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms people who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Bahrain gas-plant work and want to know what the IS-04Z1 is designed for, not what it promises. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Banagas gas plants and LPG storage

Banagas was founded in 1978 to gather associated gas that was otherwise being flared and turn it into products. Its own description of the original project covers gas compressor stations, a plant that recovers propane, butane and naphtha, and refrigerated storage at the Sitra wharf area where the liquid products are loaded to ships. Later expansion added Central Gas Plant III, built by JGC to handle gas from the increased oil production at the Bahrain Field.

For a handset, the useful point is that the classified area is a chain rather than a single fence: compressor stations and gas plants fed from the Bahrain Field gathering system, the pipelines between them, then the cold, pressurised storage and ship-loading end at Sitra.

Classified units and areas

Gas compressor stations
Compression of associated gas, with seals, knock-out drums and relief systems.
Gas processing plants
Dehydration, separation and fractionation into dry gas, propane, butane and naphtha.
Propane and butane storage
Refrigerated tanks at the Sitra wharf area; both gases are group IIA.
Shiploading at Sitra
Transfer arms, hoses and the jetty approach, with weather and spray on top of the classification.
Control rooms and offices
Safe-area buildings from which the handset is carried out.
How work runs · Banagas

How a gas plant shift is organised

A gas plant is quieter than a refinery in some ways and less forgiving in others. Parts of it run with few people on site and all of it runs continuously, so the work divides between operators on fixed rounds and maintenance crews who arrive for planned stops.

Rounds between compressors rather than between tanks

Photographing a weeping seal and sending it to the control room with a position stamp is the task the handset replaces a notebook and a radio for. Four-constellation GNSS gives the coordinate; the 50 MP camera gives the picture.

Propane and butane are not hydrogen, and the certificate says which

Propane and butane are group IIA gases, and apparatus marked IIC is suitable for them. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Banagas engineers will read the marking string and the schedule of limits on the certificate once it exists, not our summary of it.

A cold release looks like fog and sits low

A refrigerated LPG release produces a cold, heavy vapour that collects at low points. Crews move upwind and report at once, and the report needs a place as well as a description.

Expansion projects bring short-lived contractor crews

Each new scope, Central Gas Plant III being the obvious example, puts an EPC workforce inside the boundary for a limited period. Android Enterprise enrolment means a device can be issued with the site profile on arrival and wiped when the crew demobilises.

Use cases · Banagas

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used at Banagas

Operations01

Compressor station rounds

An operator logs discharge pressures and vibration observations, photographs an oil leak at a seal, and calls the shift supervisor, all inside the classified boundary. The handset replaces a notebook, a camera and a radio on the same walk.

Marine02

Shiploading at the Sitra wharf area

A device that photographs hose connections, records time and position, and is managed under the operator's MDM keeps that trail without paper entering the area.

Maintenance03

Planned stops and permits

During a stop the same compressor train may have operations, a vendor service engineer and a contractor crew around it. Enrolled handsets can carry the permit, the isolation list and the site directory, and be locked to approved applications.

What the operator will ask of a supplier

The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (Q4 2026) and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress. SAMS has no relationship with Banagas.

Banagas is listed within the Bapco Energies portfolio. Bapco Energies publishes a Supplier Portal for registration and qualification and says that adherence to its Supplier Code of Conduct, which covers health and safety among other things, is mandatory. Public tenders are also published through the Bahrain Tender Board. Which route applies to a handset purchase at Banagas is a question for its procurement and HSE teams. Expect the engineering review to ask for the certificate and its limits, the marking against each unit's classification drawing, charger and accessory rules, the camera permit policy and the repair route. The national conformity steps are on the Bahrain country page.

Questions · Banagas

Frequently asked questions

Would one site approval cover the gas plants and the refinery?

Do not assume so. The plants and the refinery are separate facilities with their own classification drawings, and each engineering group decides what it will accept. Ask both, and ask whether the group supplier registration is common to them.

Does an IIC marking cover propane and butane service?

Equipment marked for gas group IIC is suitable for IIB and IIA atmospheres, and propane and butane are IIA. The target marking is Ex ib IIC T4. The certificate, once issued, is the document to check against the unit classification.

Can the phone be used as a gas detector or H2S alarm?

No. Associated gas can carry hydrogen sulphide, and personal and fixed gas detection is a separate safety system with its own certification. The handset's job is not to be an ignition source and to carry the call or message when an alarm sounds.

Can contractors on a stop be issued the same handset?

Technically yes: Android Enterprise enrolment lets an operator or its contractor issue a unit with a profile and remove that profile at demobilisation. Whether it is allowed is for Banagas HSE and the contractor's own site rules.
