Explosion proof mobile phone for Bapco Energies

Bapco Energies is Bahrain's national energy group, and the Sitra refinery run by its refining arm is the anchor of the group's downstream business. This page covers the explosion proof mobile phone question for Bapco's Bahrain sites: the refinery and its modernised units, the tank farm and jetties, and the onshore Bahrain Field. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Bapco Energies in Bahrain

The Bahrain Field began producing in 1932 and the Sitra refinery has processed crude since the 1930s, which makes this one of the oldest oil operations on the Arabian side of the Gulf. The recent change is the Bapco Modernisation Programme. Trade press describes construction starting in 2019 and a scheme that adds new crude distillation capacity, a residue hydrocracking unit and sulphur recovery. MEES has reported that Bapco Energies expects the final capacity of the refinery to reach about 405,000 barrels a day once the new units finish ramping up.

That matters for handsets because a modernised refinery is not a uniform site. Old units, new units and units still being commissioned sit in one boundary, each with its own classification drawings, and the hazards differ: hydrogen in the hydrocracker, hydrogen sulphide in sulphur recovery, naphtha and gasoline in the tank farm, crude and products at the jetties.

How work runs · Bapco

How work is organised on a refinery of this age

A refinery runs around the clock on shift rounds and is punctuated by large planned shutdowns. The modernisation has added a third pattern, the commissioning and ramp-up of new units alongside operating ones.

Hydrogen sets the demanding gas group

The hydrocracker puts hydrogen, group IIC, in the area classification. The IS-04Z1 marking target, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, is written with IIC in mind, and the temperature class is the figure an instrumentation engineer compares with the area drawing.

New and old units in one boundary

During commissioning, vendor specialists, EPC crews and refinery operators work in the same fence line. A handset that enrols into an existing MDM console can be issued to each group with different permissions, and the console record shows who held which unit.

Jetties are a different environment from process units

Tanker work at the product jetties adds weather, spray and salt-laden air to the gas classification. IP68 sealing is there for exactly that, and a position fix with a photograph is how a defect on a long jetty gets reported accurately.

The Bahrain Field is spread out

Onshore, the area covered is wide rather than dense. Wellheads are visited by vehicle, so a full-shift battery matters more than at a compact process unit; the 4,000 mAh cell is specified for a shift.

Mixed nationalities and languages

Arabic and English on the same Android 16 build, and camera policy pushed from the existing console, fit a site where photography runs on permit.

Use cases · Bapco Energies

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used across Bapco's sites

Refining01

Process unit rounds

An operator on a distillation or hydrocracker round reads local indications, photographs a defect and reaches the control room, without carrying a separate radio and camera into the unit.

Marine02

Jetty inspections and loading

A jetty inspector can record hose and arm condition with photographs stamped with time and position, and report to the loading master from the same device.

Upstream03

Wellsite visits at the Bahrain Field

A technician moving between widely separated wellsites needs navigation, photographs and a call to the field control room, and cannot return to a safe-area charging point between each one.

What the operator will ask of a supplier

The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (Q4 2026) and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress. SAMS does not claim any relationship with Bapco Energies.

Bapco Energies runs a Supplier Portal for registration and qualification and states that adherence to its Supplier Code of Conduct is mandatory. Bapco Upstream notes that completing prospective supplier registration does not imply a contract, and that its tenders are published on the Bahrain Tender Board without a pre-registration requirement. Those are the verified starting points. Beyond them, ask the Bapco procurement and HSE teams which engineering group reviews communications equipment for classified areas and what they need to see. A local partner would normally hold documents and spares; the Bahrain country page explains how SAMS expects to supply.

Questions · Bapco Energies

Frequently asked questions

Is Bapco Energies the same company as the old BAPCO?

Bapco Energies is the group name, and its own portfolio lists the refinery, upstream and gas businesses as separate operating companies. Check which entity is the buyer for the site you mean before assembling a vendor file.

Does registering on a supplier portal mean we can sell a phone?

No. Registration is a first step and by the operator's own wording does not imply a contract. A hazardous-area device then needs its own technical review.

Do the hydrogen areas need a different device from the tank farm?

The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, which covers hydrogen and the heavier gases. The unit classification drawing decides, and the certificate is what you compare it with.

Will the device be allowed in every area of the refinery?

Not necessarily. Operators restrict photography and personal devices in places regardless of certification, and a managed, issued handset is the usual way to respect that.
