Power station
Senoko Power Station is a combined cycle plant with a licensed capacity of 2,644 MW and supplies about 20 per cent of Singapore's electricity needs, according to its operator.
Senoko is an industrial subzone of Sembawang on Singapore's northern coast, best known for Senoko Power Station. Classified areas centre on the power station's gas systems and on fuel storage tank leasing and terminal services, not on the whole estate. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe mobile phone for Senoko, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Senoko: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Senoko Industrial Zone. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Senoko Power Station is a combined cycle plant with a licensed capacity of 2,644 MW and supplies about 20 per cent of Singapore's electricity needs, according to its operator.
Senoko Energy lists Marubeni Corporation and Sembcorp Industries as its shareholders.
Senoko Power Station is the largest power station in Singapore and was commissioned in 1976, after planning began in the early 1970s under the Public Utilities Board.
Its authorised capacity is 2,800 megawatts from seven operating units, and it runs mainly as a combined-cycle gas plant, so gas-turbine halls and fuel systems form its main classified areas.
Natural gas supplies over 90 percent of Singapore's electricity, up from less than 20 percent in 2000, which is why large gas-fired plants such as Senoko dominate the local hazardous-area picture.
Combined-cycle units 6 and 7, rated at 431 megawatts each, were completed by 2012 by repowering the second oil-fired steam stage, while units 3 to 5 at 365 megawatts each followed by 2004.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Senoko. Plant rounds through gas receiving, fuel storage and turbine halls are walking inspections with readings, photos and permits to log. A handheld intrinsically safe phone is intended for that routine, if certification is completed and the owner accepts it. Outage periods with many contractors add to the case for a managed device.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are power plant gas and fuel systems, fuel storage tanks and terminal services. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Combined-cycle units are taken offline for planned inspections, and contractor numbers rise during those windows. Dates are set by the operator and the grid, so ask the plant's maintenance planner about the outage calendar and the approved-equipment list.
Natural gas has been the main fuel since 1992, with fuel oil as a back-up. Gas groups and temperature classes differ between natural gas and oil vapour, so devices should be matched to the gas group and temperature class stated in the plant's area classification.
No. The classified areas are mostly the gas and fuel systems and fuel tanks at the power station, not the estate as a whole. Other tenants have not been checked here. Ask the relevant operator for its classification before assuming a zone, and confirm with the site operator.
