The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Red Deer and Joffre industrial area. Flammable gas and liquid handling throughout the site creates classified areas around ethylene and polyethylene plants, ethane feedstock handling and hydrocarbon storage. NOVA Chemicals classifies them. Alberta's Safety Codes system and CSA C22.1 apply. SAMS does not classify areas, so ask the operator for its records.

Questions · Red Deer Industrial

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Red Deer Industrial today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Red Deer Industrial cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Red Deer and Joffre industrial area would use it?

Likely candidates are ethylene plants, polyethylene plants, ethane feedstock handling, hydrocarbon storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

What hazardous areas does an ethylene and polyethylene plant have?

Typically cracker furnaces, ethylene and hydrogen areas, polymer reactors and powder handling with dust risks. Gas groups can reach IIB or IIC for hydrogen, and dust zones may apply. Confirm area classification drawings with the operator.

What does a turnaround at Joffre involve for contractors?

The site reports up to 1,200 contractors during turnarounds, so induction, permits and gate checks are structured. Confirm the contractor safety process and approved-device list with NOVA Chemicals before mobilising.

Is ethylene a concern for choosing the gas group?

Ethylene is commonly treated as a more demanding gas than typical fuels, which is why a marking check at an ethylene plant looks closely at the gas group. The IS-04Z1 target marking includes IIC. The plant operator sets the gas group for each area, so request that data before any evaluation.
