Cold climate
Fort McMurray's January average is about -17 degrees C, so batteries, touchscreens and seals are tested by winter conditions.
Canada's oil sands, mainly the Athabasca deposit in northern Alberta, are produced by open-pit mining with on-site upgrading and by in situ methods. Outside Alberta there are two upgraders in Saskatchewan, the Lloydminster Upgrader and the NewGrade Upgrader, both processing Saskatchewan heavy oil. An ATEX and IECEx mobile phone distributor in Canada's oil sands would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Canada's oil sands has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Canada Oil Sands. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Syncrude is owned by a joint venture in which Suncor holds the majority interest, and Suncor, Canadian Natural and Imperial run the major mines.
About 40 percent of oil sands bitumen is upgraded into synthetic crude before sale, mostly from mining operations, with a smaller share from in-situ producers.
The Athabasca, Peace River and Cold Lake oil sands deposits together lie under about 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg in northern Alberta, according to figures attributed to the provincial energy ministry and regulator.
Apart from Scotford, the upgraders are integrated with the mine's bitumen plant, and waste heat from product cooling heats process water for the adjacent mine, reducing natural gas use.
Alberta has five bitumen upgraders: four turn mined bitumen into synthetic crude and one produces mostly diesel from thermal in-situ bitumen, all handling flammable hydrocarbons at high temperature and pressure.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Canada's oil sands. Procurement teams across the oil sands, from Suncor to Cenovus, would expect certificate evidence attached to a clear marking and conditions of use. A dual ATEX and IECEx route, once issued, would also support international engineering firms and equipment vendors serving several producers. The IS-04Z1 holds no certificate today.
A distributor for Canada's oil sands would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are bitumen extraction and froth treatment, upgrader process units, diluent and naphtha handling, sagd facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Canada's oil sands.
Mines mainly have fuel, diluent and froth treatment areas classified, while in-situ sites add steam plants, wellpads and produced gas handling. Upgraders have the widest classified zones. Confirm with each operator which areas need certified devices.
At integrated mines, upgrader and mine plants sit together and share heat, which can make the classified footprint larger and more complex to map. Confirm with the operator the zone drawings for the exact area you will work in.
Normally yes. Equipment is usually approved by the site operator's HSE or electrical authority and bought through its contractor channels. A manufacturer certificate would be one input, not the whole decision. Ask the operator what documents, zone ratings and trial steps it requires before deployment.
