Hazardous Area Mobile Phone in Fujairah Oil Terminal

The Port of Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman outside the Strait of Hormuz, has an oil terminal (FOTT) with main and wing berths, bunker barge berths and a VLCC jetty. The Port of Fujairah is the largest port on the UAE's eastern seaboard and is described as the world's second largest bunkering hub, so marine fuel handling is constant. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Fujairah oil terminals, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

More about Fujairah oil terminals that matters for portable equipment

Fujairah oil terminals: geography and layout

Fujairah lies on the only eastern seaboard of the UAE and is within 300 km of all the emirates, so equipment can be trucked in from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Fujairah oil terminals: rules and approvals

UAE handsets need type approval from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, with certificates renewed every three years and a valid supplier register.

Fujairah oil terminals: who works there

The southern breakwater berth is the common site for vessel repair and has a travel lift for maintenance, so ship-repair hot work can sit close to oil terminal activity.

Fujairah oil terminals: logistics and access

The port is connected to the Etihad Rail network linking Ruwais, Ghuwaifat and Fujairah, and the rail in Fujairah is used to carry bulk containers and oil.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Fujairah oil terminals. Fujairah's classified areas include oil tank farms, marine loading jetties, pump and manifold areas and bunkering operations. The port or terminal operator classifies them, not SAMS. The Habshan-Fujairah pipeline delivers crude from Abu Dhabi, so areas at the receiving end form part of the picture.

Questions · Fujairah Oil Terminal

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area mobile phone in Fujairah Oil Terminal today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does a hazardous area mobile phone in Fujairah Oil Terminal cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Fujairah oil terminals would use it?

Likely candidates are oil tank farms, marine loading jetties, pump and manifold areas, bunkering operations. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Do Fujairah oil terminals set their own rules for portable devices?

Usually yes. Terminal companies such as Fujairah Oil Terminal FZC run their own safety management and approvals for visitors and contractors. Ask for the terminal's current requirements for portable electronic equipment, including certification marks and any permit requirements, before shipping.

Why do Fujairah terminals need Zone 1 equipment?

Tank farms, jetties, manifolds and pump areas handling crude oil and petroleum products typically have flammable vapour hazards. The port is a major bunkering hub, so loading arms and hoses are used all day. Area classification is set by each terminal operator, so ask for the drawings.

Can a handheld be used on marine jetties at Fujairah?

Jetties are typically classified areas, so any device must suit the zone, gas group and temperature class set by the terminal operator. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, still in progress. Ask the terminal's HSE team what evidence it requires for a jetty.
