Climate
Hot desert climate with summer highs around 41 degrees C; heavy rain can occur.
The Port of Fujairah is the largest port on the UAE's eastern seaboard and is described as the world's second largest bunkering hub, so marine fuel handling is constant. Tank farms, jetties, manifolds and bunkering areas give Zone 1 classification, and the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline brings Abu Dhabi crude. This page explains what to look for in an IECEx mobile phone for Fujairah oil terminals, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Fujairah oil terminals: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Fujairah Oil Terminal. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The oil terminal can operate 9 main berths or 14 wing berths for vessels up to 200,000 dwt, plus 4 bunker barge berths and a VLCC jetty for vessels up to 330,000 dwt.
The port is connected to the Etihad Rail network linking Ruwais, Ghuwaifat and Fujairah, and the rail in Fujairah is used to carry bulk containers and oil.
Port construction began in 1978, container operations started in 1982, the first oil terminal opened in January 2006 and the second in June 2010.
The northern breakwater berth hosts the port's two oil terminals, while the southern berth has 840 m of general cargo quay with a 15 m draft.
Fujairah VIII liquids storage terminal, operated by Fujairah Oil Terminal FZC and operational since 2015, is reached by pipeline, road and sea and mainly stores crude oil and petroleum products.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Fujairah oil terminals. Bunkering and tanker work at Fujairah involves international surveyors, crews and contractors. IECEx gives them a shared international reference, with a certificate of conformity and a schedule of conditions. SAMS has no IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 yet; certification is under way.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are oil tank farms, marine loading jetties, pump and manifold areas, bunkering operations. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Usually yes. Terminal companies such as Fujairah Oil Terminal FZC run their own safety management and approvals for visitors and contractors. Ask for the terminal's current requirements for portable electronic equipment, including certification marks and any permit requirements, before shipping.
Tank farms, jetties, manifolds and pump areas handling crude oil and petroleum products typically have flammable vapour hazards. The port is a major bunkering hub, so loading arms and hoses are used all day. Area classification is set by each terminal operator, so ask for the drawings.
Jetties are typically classified areas, so any device must suit the zone, gas group and temperature class set by the terminal operator. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, still in progress. Ask the terminal's HSE team what evidence it requires for a jetty.
