Umm Al Nar closed
ADNOC's older Abu Dhabi Refinery on Umm Al Nar Island, which processed up to 85,000 barrels a day, was shut in 2022 as ADNOC focused its downstream strategy on Ruwais.
ADNOC's Ruwais complex in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhannah area is the biggest refinery in the Middle East, with Ruwais Refinery East rated at over 922,000 barrels a day and Ruwais Refinery West at up to 417,000. ADNOC's Ruwais Refinery East can process up to 922,000 barrels a day of crude and condensate, the largest refinery in the Middle East, and is closely integrated with other plants in the Ruwais industrial area. Distribution partners for UAE refineries are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. UAE refineries has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in UAE Refineries. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Hot, humid Gulf coastal climate; outdoor equipment should resist heat and salt air.
One published refinery list gives the Jebel Ali refinery a capacity of 140,000 barrels a day, showing that it is a mid-sized plant compared with the Ruwais complex.
The same list shows smaller Fujairah plants of 80,000, 7,500 and 70,000 barrels a day, so refining sites are scattered across the east coast as well as the Gulf.
Outside Abu Dhabi, the Jebel Ali refinery in Dubai is run by ENOC Processing Company, a subsidiary of ENOC, the Dubai government's energy group established in 1993.
A condensate splitter typically yields about half naphtha, 30 per cent jet fuel and 10 per cent gas oil, so light, easily ignited products dominate the process units.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In UAE refineries. ADNOC's refining operations at Ruwais and Umm Al Nar are the main buyers here, so a reviewer would look for certificate numbers, markings and schedules of conditions for devices in process units and tank farms. A dual ATEX and IECEx route also helps turnaround contractors from abroad. The IS-04Z1 certificates are in progress.
A distributor for UAE refineries would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, tank farms, loading jetties and gantries, product pipelines. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for UAE refineries.
A splitter typically produces mostly naphtha and jet fuel, which are light, volatile and easily ignited, so flammable vapour is the main concern. That usually means gas classification around pumps, tanks and loading areas; the operator sets the zones and gas group.
One published list gives Jebel Ali about 140,000 barrels a day, against several hundred thousand for the Ruwais complex. Smaller plants can mean fewer units on site, but hazards per unit are similar, and each has its own rules for contractors.
The Gulf coast is hot and humid, and outdoor equipment should resist heat and salt air. The IS-04Z1 is designed to IP68 with a 4,000 mAh battery, but heat and salt limits are not published. Ask for the datasheet and agree outdoor-use conditions with the operator.
