Pohang is North Gyeongsang's largest city, with about 491,000 residents, on the East Sea coast beside Yeongil Bay. Pohang is the largest city in North Gyeongsang Province, with 499,363 residents in 2022, on Yeongil Bay at the mouth of the Hyeongsan River facing the East Sea. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof smartphone for Pohang, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Pohang: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Pohang. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Yeongil Bay supports a port that handled 54.8 million tonnes in 2006.
Mild winters and warm, wet summers; about 1,192 mm of rain a year.
The city is promoting itself as a diversified centre of environmentalism, advanced learning and culture, to reduce its reliance on heavy industry such as steelmaking.
Pohang's shipping port and road arteries made it strategically significant in the mid-twentieth century, and the port remains the city's sea gateway on the East Sea coast.
POSCO's Pohang works runs three remaining blast furnaces after the first was shut down in December 2021, alongside basic oxygen and electric arc furnace routes.
After four expansion phases the Pohang plant's crude steel capacity rose from 1.03 million tonnes a year at start-up to 9.1 million tonnes by 1983.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Pohang. In a steelworks, explosion-proof is a loose label. Flameproof Ex d fits fixed motors and junction boxes, while a handheld phone near by-product gas lines depends on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed around that concept, with certification in progress and POSCO's own rules deciding where it may be used.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are steelworks process gas systems, coke-making and by-product gas, steel plant dust areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
POSCO's plant has anchored the local economy since 1972, so much industrial contracting there is linked to it, though shipbuilding and other industries also exist. Contractors typically register through the operator's own vendor and safety processes, so confirm the current route.
Steel plants involve coke-oven, blast-furnace and converter gases that are toxic and flammable, plus oxygen enrichment, coal and iron-ore dust and fuel gas systems. The operator defines gas and dust zones, so ask for classification drawings before bringing handheld devices.
POSCO runs its own supplier registration and safety approvals, and SAMS has no role in them. A supplier or distributor would need to approach its procurement and HSE teams directly. Confirm requirements with the site operator, and note that the IS-04Z1 is still pre-launch.
