Steelworks
POSCO's Pohang plant was dedicated in 1973 and POSCO runs two integrated steelworks, at Pohang and Gwangyang.
Pohang is North Gyeongsang's largest city, with about 491,000 residents, on the East Sea coast beside Yeongil Bay. It is headquarters of POSCO, which has an integrated steelworks there, and steel plant gas systems and dust create classified areas. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Pohang, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Pohang: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

POSCO's Pohang plant was dedicated in 1973 and POSCO runs two integrated steelworks, at Pohang and Gwangyang.
Yeongil Bay supports a port that handled 54.8 million tonnes in 2006.
Pohang has a humid subtropical climate, with a January mean of 2.2 degrees Celsius, an August mean of 26.0 degrees and about 1,152 mm of rain a year, peaking in August at around 227 mm.
The steelmaker POSCO was inaugurated in Pohang in 1968 and its local plant began production in the early 1970s, bringing heavy industry to a city that had about 50,000 people in the 1960s.
The city is promoting itself as a diversified centre of environmentalism, advanced learning and culture, to reduce its reliance on heavy industry such as steelmaking.
Pohang's shipping port and road arteries made it strategically significant in the mid-twentieth century, and the port remains the city's sea gateway on the East Sea coast.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Pohang. A reviewer at a steelworks would expect clear evidence for any handheld used near process gas systems, and international suppliers and plant-engineering contractors often bring ATEX or IECEx documents. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, so only a datasheet is available. POSCO decides which evidence it accepts.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are steelworks process gas systems, coke-making and by-product gas, steel plant dust areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
POSCO's plant has anchored the local economy since 1972, so much industrial contracting there is linked to it, though shipbuilding and other industries also exist. Contractors typically register through the operator's own vendor and safety processes, so confirm the current route.
Steel plants involve coke-oven, blast-furnace and converter gases that are toxic and flammable, plus oxygen enrichment, coal and iron-ore dust and fuel gas systems. The operator defines gas and dust zones, so ask for classification drawings before bringing handheld devices.
POSCO runs its own supplier registration and safety approvals, and SAMS has no role in them. A supplier or distributor would need to approach its procurement and HSE teams directly. Confirm requirements with the site operator, and note that the IS-04Z1 is still pre-launch.
