Port and yards
Tuas Port has operated since 2022 with 14 berths and is due to reach 18 by 2027; Seatrium's headquarters yard is at 80 Tuas South Boulevard.
Tuas was swamp and then a fishing village before being resettled in the 1970s and developed for industry, with land reclaimed off the coast from the 1980s and still expanding. Classified areas arise mainly at shipyards, dangerous-goods chemical handling and process plants. An explosion proof mobile phone distributor in Tuas would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Tuas has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Tuas Industrial Zone. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Tuas Port has operated since 2022 with 14 berths and is due to reach 18 by 2027; Seatrium's headquarters yard is at 80 Tuas South Boulevard.
Tuas was resettled in the 1970s and developed for industry; heavy industry is present, though less than on Jurong Island.
Tuas is mostly industrial with few homes, so workers live in basic residential blocks at Benoi Sector and Pioneer Road or travel in from other parts of Singapore.
Tuas Port opened on 1 September 2022 and will span about 1,337 hectares with 66 berths over 26 kilometres once complete, which is shifting container operations towards the far west of the island.
Two of Singapore's four incinerators, Tuas and Tuas South, and a palm-oil renewable diesel plant completed in 2010, are located in the zone.
Tuas is bounded by the Western Water Catchment to the north, Pioneer to the east and the Straits of Johor to the west, and it has six subzones including Tuas Bay and Tuas View.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Tuas. In a shipyard or fuel store, explosion-proof is a loose term. Flameproof Ex d fits fixed equipment, while a handheld phone carried through drydock work or fuel handling relies on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed around that concept, with certification in progress and tenant rules still applying.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Tuas yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are shipyard and drydock work, dangerous-goods chemical blending and storage, fabrication and coating shops. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Tuas.
Mostly shipyards, chemical and fuel handling sites, a renewable diesel plant and waste-to-energy facilities. Classified areas are limited to specific plants rather than the whole zone, so ask each tenant for its area classification.
Yes. The port will grow in phases through the 2040s and PSA plans to relocate city terminals into it, so traffic and construction will increase. Contractors should check gate and escort rules with the host site.
No. Classified areas arise mainly at shipyards, fuel and chemical handling and process plants, and which tenants have them has not been verified individually. Ask each tenant for its area classification, and confirm with the site operator.
