Industrial use
Tuas was resettled in the 1970s and developed for industry; heavy industry is present, though less than on Jurong Island.
Tuas is a largely industrial planning area of 47.7 square kilometres in far western Singapore, with shipyards, heavy industry, a chemicals hub and the new Tuas Port. Classified areas arise mainly at shipyards, dangerous-goods chemical handling and process plants. Distribution partners for Tuas are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Tuas has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Tuas Industrial Zone. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

JTC Chemicals Hub @ Tuas South (4 Tuas South Drive) is a multi-tenant development for manufacturing, blending and distribution of chemicals, including dangerous goods, with enhanced fire protection systems.
Seatrium's Tuas Yard at 51 Pioneer Sector 1 and its Tuas Boulevard Yard at 80 Tuas South Boulevard operate in the area, with the latter also hosting FPSO construction.
The Malaysia-Singapore Second Link opened on 2 January 1998 via Tuas, and the AYE and PIE expressways connect Tuas to the rest of Singapore.
Tuas was swamp and then a fishing village before being resettled in the 1970s and developed for industry, with land reclaimed off the coast from the 1980s and still expanding.
Tuas is mostly industrial with few homes, so workers live in basic residential blocks at Benoi Sector and Pioneer Road or travel in from other parts of Singapore.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Tuas. The classified spots in Tuas are Zone 1 pockets within shipyard tanks, fuel and chemical handling areas and coating shops, not the whole zone. A marking check should compare gas group and temperature class with the specific substance on site. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, not yet issued.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Tuas. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are shipyard and drydock work, dangerous-goods chemical blending and storage, fabrication and coating shops. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Tuas.
Mostly shipyards, chemical and fuel handling sites, a renewable diesel plant and waste-to-energy facilities. Classified areas are limited to specific plants rather than the whole zone, so ask each tenant for its area classification.
Yes. The port will grow in phases through the 2040s and PSA plans to relocate city terminals into it, so traffic and construction will increase. Contractors should check gate and escort rules with the host site.
No. Classified areas arise mainly at shipyards, fuel and chemical handling and process plants, and which tenants have them has not been verified individually. Ask each tenant for its area classification, and confirm with the site operator.
