Explosion proof mobile phone for LNG & Midstream in the United States

The explosion proof mobile phone requirement for US LNG and midstream work comes down to two kinds of site: Gulf Coast export terminals, and the compressor stations and gas plants that feed them. This page is for terminal operators, pipeline owners and the contractors who service them. For one operator’s terminals, see our page on an explosion proof phone for Cheniere. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone for US LNG and midstream sites

FERC’s export map from March 2026 lists Sabine Pass in Louisiana, Cameron LNG at Hackberry, Freeport in Texas, Calcasieu Pass in Cameron Parish, Cove Point in Maryland and Elba Island in Georgia as operating terminals, with Plaquemines in Louisiana and Golden Pass in Texas the large projects still in construction or start-up. Golden Pass produced its first LNG on 30 March 2026, with QatarEnergy holding 70 per cent and ExxonMobil 30 per cent. Upstream of the terminals is the midstream chain: gathering lines, gas processing plants and compressor stations. In the Delaware Basin, Enterprise has built a series of Mentone natural gas processing plants, and in Appalachia, processing of Marcellus and Utica gas runs to several billion cubic feet a day. The common feature is a small crew supervising a large classified footprint, which is exactly the situation where an Ex handset earns its place.

Sites and assets

Sabine Pass and Cameron LNG
Louisiana liquefaction on the Sabine-Neches and Calcasieu waterways.
Freeport LNG
Texas terminal on Quintana Island, supplied by intrastate pipelines.
Calcasieu Pass and Plaquemines
Newer Louisiana liquefaction sites using a modular build approach.
Cove Point and Elba Island
East Coast terminals in Maryland and Georgia.
Golden Pass
Texas terminal at Sabine Pass, in start-up through 2026.
Mentone and Marcellus plants
Gas processing in the Delaware Basin and Appalachia.

Hazards and rules

Methane and refrigerants
Natural gas is group IIA; ethylene and propane refrigerants add IIA and IIB.
Compressor stations
Enclosed buildings with gas detection and ventilation as the primary safeguard.
Cryogenic LNG
A hazard of its own, covered by procedure rather than equipment marking.
Regulation
FERC siting, plus PHMSA’s 49 CFR Part 193 for LNG plant safety.
Pipeline operators
Unmanned stations visited on a fixed route by a technician.
Weather
Gulf hurricane season and Appalachian winter on the same estate.
Built for local conditions

What the sector asks of a handset

LNG terminals and midstream stations share one operating pattern: small crews, large classified areas and contractors who rotate between jobs.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Unmanned stations visited on a schedule

A compressor station may be unstaffed between visits. Four-constellation GNSS, a clear camera and Android 16 let a technician log what was found, where and when, in a form the control room can open immediately.

Commissioning and start-up bring new crews

Terminals such as Golden Pass and Plaquemines draw a large pool of commissioning contractors. A managed fleet with centralised enrolment keeps device policy consistent while the workforce changes.

Different equipment codes in one company

A terminal built under an international EPC contract may carry IECEx or ATEX documentation while an older US station is drawn in Class and Division terms. The IS-04Z1 is being certified to IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 so paperwork exists for each.

Cold and wet as well as hot

Appalachian winter and Gulf summer are both part of one fleet’s year. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer, and temperature class still has to be checked against each area.

Questions an LNG or pipeline operator will raise

These are generic questions, not a description of any operator’s registration programme, which we have not verified.

Evidence01

Certificates before units

No device enters a classified area before its listing and certificates exist. Pre-launch, what can be shared is the datasheet and a written certification schedule.

Integration02

Existing MDM and SCADA tooling

Ask the operator’s IT team which console administers field devices and whether the handset must work with its existing Android Enterprise setup.

Contractors03

One policy across owners and EPC firms

Decide who issues devices on an EPC site and what happens to data on them when the job finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for LNG terminals?

Not yet. IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch, and no certificate has been issued. SAMS has no supply relationship with any named terminal.

Does an LNG terminal need Zone 21 dust protection?

Rarely for the liquefaction process itself, but compressor station and utility areas, and some construction work, can raise dust questions. The Zone 21 design target means one device is aimed at both, subject to each area classification.

How does this page differ from the Cheniere page?

This one covers the sector across terminals and midstream. The Cheniere Energy page goes through Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi site by site.

Ask about the IS-04Z1 for LNG & Midstream, United States

Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for United States. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
