Explosion proof mobile phone for Chevron in the United States

Anyone looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for Chevron in the United States is really looking at three different jobs: Permian wellpads in the Delaware and Midland basins, the Pascagoula refinery on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and the Anchor deepwater host in the Gulf of Mexico. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and IT people who decide what may be carried into those classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Chevron’s US hazardous areas are

Chevron describes its Permian position as about 1.78 million net acres across the Delaware and Midland basins of west Texas and southeast New Mexico, developed as multi-well pads where several formations are drilled from one surface location. Its US onshore business is run by the Mid-Continent business unit, headquartered in Houston with large offices at Midland and Carlsbad. On the coast, the Pascagoula refinery in Jackson County, Mississippi, processes roughly 350,000 barrels of crude a day, and a premium base oil plant that started up in 2014 added about 25,000 barrels a day of hydroprocessed lubricant base stock. Offshore, Anchor is a semisubmersible production unit in about 5,000 feet of water, some 140 miles off Louisiana, tied back to seven subsea wells designed for 20,000 psi. Between them these sites cover almost every classified-area situation a phone is likely to meet.

Assets and work areas

Permian wellpads
Wellheads, separators and tank batteries on multi-well pads, visited on lease operator routes.
Midland and Carlsbad
Offices and field bases where routes start; the nearest safe-area charging point.
Pascagoula refinery
Crude and vacuum distillation, jet fuel hydrotreating and conversion units in a single fenced site.
Pascagoula base oil plant
Hydroprocessing at pressure, so hydrogen is part of the area classification.
Anchor production unit
Design capacity of 75,000 barrels of oil a day through seven subsea wells.
Gulf of Mexico host decks
Wellbay, separation and compression areas on a platform where space is tight.

What a handset has to survive

Hydrocarbon vapour
Gas group IIA (NEC Group D) in most process areas and around tank battery vents and hatches.
Hydrogen
Gas group IIC, which is the reason the marking target on the IS-04Z1 is Ex ib IIC.
Sour fluids
Hydrogen sulfide is toxic as well as flammable; a phone never replaces the personal gas monitor.
Turnaround debris
Scale, catalyst and grit during vessel work and line breaks at Pascagoula.
Salt and spray
Coastal air at Pascagoula and sea spray on the Gulf of Mexico host.
Remote coverage
Out-of-range stretches of the Permian and no cellular signal offshore.

What each Chevron site asks of a handset

The area classification decides whether a device may be carried at all. After that, the site decides how it is used, and the three Chevron environments in the United States put very different loads on a phone.

Lease routes with long gaps between charging points

A Permian lease operator drives from pad to pad and spends much of the shift outside any building. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to carry a working shift, and four-constellation GNSS keeps a lone worker locatable where cellular coverage is patchy.

A turnaround is a contractor event

Reports of the spring 2025 Pascagoula turnaround described work on the crude units, vacuum distillation and jet fuel hydrotreating, with outside contractors supplying labour and logistics. A handset that Android Enterprise can enrol, restrict and wipe in minutes suits a workforce that changes every few weeks.

Offshore, a broken device waits for the next helicopter

Anchor uses an all-electric production unit and carries a capped number of people on board. IP68 sealing and a camera that records the defect before the maintenance request goes ashore matter more there than any feature list.

Division language onshore, zones in the standard

US plants are mostly specified as Class I Division 1 or 2, while IECEx and ATEX work in zones. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with NEC 500 listing in progress, so ask each site for its area classification drawing rather than assuming either.

Approvals · Chevron US

Getting a handset accepted on a Chevron site

We have not verified any Chevron contractor-registration programme and will not invent one. What can be said is how equipment approval normally runs at a US operator of this size.

Evidence01

The listing and the control drawing

OSHA requires equipment in a classified location to be approved, so the first question is which NRTL mark is on the label and what class, division and group it covers. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, so today the answer is a schedule, not a certificate.

Process02

The operator’s own approval step

Ask the site’s procurement and HSE teams what they require beyond the certificate: a technical review, a management-of-change record, or an entry in an approved-equipment list. These differ between refinery, upstream and offshore.

Support03

Who fixes it and who owns the MDM

An Ex-certified unit cannot be opened by a general repair shop. Agree before purchase who services it, where spares sit and which team administers the Android Enterprise console.

Questions · Chevron

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for United States

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for use at Chevron sites?

No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and SAMS has no supply relationship, pilot or approval from Chevron. This page describes what Chevron’s teams would reasonably ask for and what the device is designed for.

Which gas group matters most at Pascagoula?

Most refinery process areas are group IIA (Group D), but hydrogen in hydroprocessing units is group IIC, which is why the design target is Ex ib IIC rather than IIA or IIB. The site’s own area classification documents are the authority, not this page.

Does the same handset work on the Permian and offshore?

The design target is the same, Zone 1 and Zone 21 with NEC 500 Class I Division 1 in progress. The practical differences are the enrolment profile, whether platform Wi-Fi is available and who services units that fail.
