Explosion proof phone for Switzerland, Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for solvent and powder atmospheres, from a production building in Basel or Visp to a loading rack at Cressier and a digester hall at a cantonal wastewater works. It is pre-launch: the certification programme is running, and Swiss operators and contractors can read the evidence and test a unit while it does.

Where it works in Switzerland

Swiss classified areas are concentrated rather than sprawling. The pharmaceutical and fine chemical cluster around Basel runs up the Rhine and out to the Valais and the Chablais, fuel is refined at one site and stored at a handful of depots, and a long tail of biogas and wastewater plants adds Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas in almost every canton. Solvent handling is the dominant case, and it is usually indoors, in a validated building, under a cleaning regime.

Operators and contractors such as Lonza, Novartis and Roche need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Basel and Schweizerhalle, Visp and Monthey. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Swiss plant conditions

A Swiss evaluation is rarely about heat or sand. It is about solvent, powder, cleaning, and whether the device fits a building that is validated and multilingual.

For evaluators in Switzerland, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Solvent atmospheres first; Powder in the same building; Cleaning and wipe-down; Three working languages; Valleys, not plains; A full shift on one charge.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh

OSAndroid 16

Solvent atmospheres first

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Group IIC and temperature class T4 are what a solvent charging point, a dryer or a centrifuge area in fine chemical production is normally specified against, which is the dominant Zone 1 case here.

Powder in the same building

Dust protection for Zone 21 belongs to the same certification programme. Active ingredient handling, milling and dispensing put a dust zone metres from a gas zone, and a single device rated for both removes the swap at the airlock.

Cleaning and wipe-down

IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at a plant that is cleaned rather than a plant that is rained on. A handset in a pharmaceutical building is wiped between rooms, and the seal has to survive that as a routine rather than an event.

Three working languages

Android 16 carries German, French and Italian interfaces, and the manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity are produced in the language of the site rather than in English only. A group with plants in Basel, Monthey and Ticino needs all three.

Valleys, not plains

Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE hold a position and a link in the Valais and the Chablais, where terrain thins coverage and a single operator network is not always the one your site uses.

A full shift on one charge

The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a complete shift with the camera and a batch record application open, which matters where the nearest charger is outside the classified building and behind a gowning step.

Approvals in Switzerland

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

Switzerland is not in the European Union, so ATEX does not apply here by force of EU law. It applies by two other routes: the Swiss VGSEB mirrors the directive, and the Mutual Recognition Agreement with the EU covers the ATEX sector, so one conformity assessment serves both markets. The Swiss difference is on the employer side, where SUVA guidance rather than an EU directive is what your safety people will quote.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

Switzerland is not in the European Union, so ATEX 2014/34/EU does not apply here of its own force. Two things bring it in anyway. The first is Swiss law: the ordinance on equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, the VGSEB, SR 734.6, sets essentially the same requirements as the directive. The second is the Agreement between Switzerland and the European Community on mutual recognition in relation to conformity assessment, in force since 1 June 2002, which covers the ATEX product sector among its chapters. The practical result for a buyer is straightforward: a conformity assessment carried out by an EU notified body is recognised in Switzerland, and a Swiss one is recognised in the EU, so no second certificate is issued and no Swiss-only test programme exists. What Switzerland does add is documentary: information supplied with the product has to be in the official language of the place where it is placed on the market, and a responsible economic operator has to be identifiable. Radio functions run under the Swiss ordinance on telecommunications installations, supervised by OFCOM, known in German as BAKOM.

On the employer side Switzerland does not use the EU workplace directive at all, and this is the part that surprises buyers who assume Swiss practice is simply German practice. Explosion protection duties sit under the accident prevention framework, with the EKAS, the federal coordination commission for occupational safety, issuing directives, and SUVA acting both as the accident insurer for most industrial employers and as the body whose technical guidance is followed in practice. SUVA leaflet 2153 on explosion protection and the EKAS directive 1825 are the documents a Swiss safety officer will hold open while evaluating your handset, and SUVA inspects the sites it insures. Alongside that, ESTI supervises electrical installations, and installations inside explosion protection zones 0, 20, 1 and 21 are treated as special installations rather than ordinary ones. So the certificate is European, the evaluation is Swiss, and both have to be answered.

Use cases · Switzerland

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Switzerland includes: Solvent charging in a Basel or Visp production building; Campaign changeover at Monthey or Kaisten; Loading racks and tank checks at Cressier and Vernier; Digester and gas upgrading rounds at a cantonal works.

Pharmaceuticals01

Solvent charging in a Basel or Visp production building

Charging a reactor from a drum is one of the few remaining hands-on steps in a modern production suite, and it is done inside a Zone 1 area under a permit. A handset rated for that area lets the operator confirm the batch record, photograph the connection and call the shift leader without walking out through a gowning airlock and back again.

Fine chemicals02

Campaign changeover at Monthey or Kaisten

A campaign plant changes product several times a year, and each changeover means cleaning, sampling and re-verification across gas and dust areas in the same building. One device that stays valid through the changeover keeps the checklists, the photographs and the deviations in a single record instead of three.

Fuel logistics03

Loading racks and tank checks at Cressier and Vernier

The Cressier refinery and the Geneva depots run gantries, pipeline connections and tank inspections outdoors and around the clock. A Zone 1 handset gives the operator a camera, a work order and a phone in the same hand at the rack, which is where most of the observations that matter are actually made.

Municipal energy04

Digester and gas upgrading rounds at a cantonal works

Wastewater treatment works with digesters, gas holders and upgrading skids are classified areas operated by very small teams, often one technician on a round. Equipment there has to work outdoors, hold a connection across a scattered site and let a lone worker document a fault properly the first time.

How to buy · Switzerland

How to evaluate and buy in Switzerland

The device has not launched, so nothing below asks for an order. The sequence is built so your SUVA-facing documentation and our certification programme progress together.

  1. 01

Send the zone plan and the solvent list

Tell us the zones, the gas group and temperature class, whether Zone 21 dust areas are in scope, the working language of the site and roughly how many users you would equip. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress, which is enough to begin the equipment entry in your zone documentation and to open a supplier file.

  3. 03

Test a unit in the building

Evaluation units go to Swiss operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful Swiss trial covers enrolment in your own management console, the cleaning routine between rooms, use with gloves, and a full shift in a production suite.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Swiss or DACH distribution partner, or direct where a group agreement prefers that. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request in Swiss francs against a defined quantity and configuration.

Questions · Switzerland

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Switzerland?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Switzerland →
Is the IS-04Z1 already certified for use in Switzerland?

No. It is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress, with IECEx running alongside the ATEX work. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Switzerland is not in the EU. Do we need a separate Swiss certificate?

No. The Swiss VGSEB, SR 734.6, sets the same substance as ATEX 2014/34/EU, and the Mutual Recognition Agreement between Switzerland and the EU covers the ATEX sector, so a notified body assessment done in the EU is recognised here without a second certificate. The Swiss-specific work is documentary rather than technical.

Which guidance will our safety officer actually apply?

SUVA leaflet 2153 on explosion protection and the EKAS directive 1825, rather than the EU workplace directive. That is why a Swiss evaluation feels different from a German one: the certificate is the same, but the reasoning that has to accompany it is written for a SUVA reader.

What is the price of an ATEX phone in Switzerland?

There is no list price before launch. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in Swiss francs against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, and delivery follows the certificate rather than an order date. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Will documentation be available in German, French and Italian?

Yes. Swiss practice requires information to be supplied in the official language of the place where the product is placed on the market, so the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in German, French and Italian alongside English, and Android 16 carries interfaces in all three.

Can one device cover a solvent Zone 1 area and a powder Zone 21 area?

That is the design case for Swiss pharmaceutical and fine chemical buildings, where the two sit within metres of each other. The gas target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 and Zone 21 dust protection is part of the same programme, so both markings will appear on the certificate rather than requiring two handsets.

How do we take part before launch?

Register interest, take the datasheet and the certificate schedule, and request an evaluation unit under a trial agreement. Swiss sites are useful trial candidates precisely because their cleaning and containment regimes are stricter than most, and that feedback goes into the launch configuration.
