Switzerland: background
Hydraulic power was used instead of steam in Swiss industry because of the mountainous terrain and lack of coal, which explains the concentration of hydro stations and tunnels in the Alps.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for solvent and powder atmospheres, from a production building in Basel or Visp to a loading rack at Cressier and a digester hall at a cantonal wastewater works. Switzerland produces no fossil fuels and imports petroleum, so refining and bulk fuel handling is limited, while storage depots and distribution terminals are the main flammable-liquid sites. A hazardous area smartphone distributor in Switzerland would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Switzerland has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Switzerland. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Hydraulic power was used instead of steam in Swiss industry because of the mountainous terrain and lack of coal, which explains the concentration of hydro stations and tunnels in the Alps.
The three Rhine ports around Basel handle about six million tonnes and over 120,000 containers a year, roughly 10% of Swiss imports and a third of the country's mineral oil products.
Switzerland relies mainly on hydroelectric power, nuclear power and natural gas, and plans to phase out its five nuclear power plants as they reach the end of their lives, with 2044 given as a phase-out date.
Basel is Switzerland's main pharmaceutical centre, home to both Novartis and Roche.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Switzerland. Swiss classified areas are concentrated rather than sprawling: the Basel cluster running up the Rhine to Valais and Chablais, the Cressier refinery, fuel depots, and biogas and wastewater plants with Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas in almost every canton. The operator classifies these. SAMS does not classify any area.
A distributor for Switzerland would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Switzerland.
Switzerland is not an EU member, but it generally aligns its equipment rules with European requirements, so ATEX-marked devices are commonly accepted. Confirm the current requirement and any Swiss conformity marking with the site operator or your importer before ordering.
German, French and Italian are all national languages depending on the canton, and many industrial sites also work in English. Ask the operator which language it requires for instructions and certificates, and provide the declaration of conformity together with the Ex marking details.
IP68 sealing and a rugged build are aimed at a cleaned plant rather than a rained-on one, but your cleaning agents and routine must be checked. Test a unit with your own procedure and confirm compatibility with the site's validation team.
