Wet, corrosive surroundings
Digester galleries are humid and carry hydrogen sulphide. IP68 sealing is designed to resist water ingress, though chemical exposure should be assessed on each site.
Swiss wastewater works, biogas plants and gas-network injection points all have digesters, gas pipework and upgrading equipment in common. This page is for the operators and maintenance teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Switzerland for those areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still in certification. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
Almost every canton has wastewater works with anaerobic digesters, and the gas they produce is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide with hydrogen sulphide as a minor but important component. Methane is gas group IIA, so the group requirement is modest, but the zones are real: digester domes, gas holders, gas pipework, compressor rooms and flares are classified, and the zone depends on ventilation and the type of equipment. Agricultural and industrial biogas plants add feedstock reception and storage. Where the gas is upgraded to biomethane, membrane or scrubbing skids and the injection point to the gas grid are classified too. Dried sewage sludge, wood-based feedstock and similar materials can introduce a dust question. These sites are staffed by small teams, often alone, with outstations spread across a region, so the practical needs are lone working, remote photographs and a reliable network. The cantonal water-protection and energy departments and the gas industry association, SVGW, set the rules around them, and the plant's explosion protection document sets the zones.
Wastewater and biogas sites are small, wet and often unmanned at night. The handset has to work in those conditions.

Many sites have one person on duty. A managed handset can run the applications that a lone-working policy needs, but the policy is the site's.
Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE support location and connectivity; rural coverage should be checked.
Digester roofs, gas holders and outdoor skids in the Swiss Plateau and the Alps are cold and often wet from autumn to spring. Battery performance falls in the cold on any device, so test the 4,000 mAh cell on a real winter round before relying on it for a full shift, and keep a spare charged in a safe area.
Photographs and timestamped inspection notes support the records that cantonal inspectors and insurers expect.
An operator checks gas holder levels, relief valves and condensate traps, recording findings with photographs.
A service technician working on a gas engine or an upgrading skid carries manuals, work orders and a camera.
A response to a fixed gas alarm needs the plant layout, a call to a supervisor and a photograph of the cause.
No. Methane is group IIA, less demanding than IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target of IIC covers it, but the zones at biogas plants depend on ventilation and equipment.
It is toxic as well as flammable, and a personal gas detector is the safeguard, not a phone. The handset does not replace one.
Because digester gas is flammable and a leak at a gas holder, a dome relief valve or a condensate trap can create a classified atmosphere where a personal phone is not designed to be carried. Operators decide which areas are classified, and the handset follows that decision.
Not necessarily, but a few devices in an MDM console is manageable, and the site decides.
No. Certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Switzerland. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
