Explosion proof mobile phone for Novartis in Switzerland

Novartis is a Basel company, and its Swiss footprint runs from the research campus in the city to the production site at Stein in Aargau. This page is for the EHS, engineering and technical operations staff deciding where an explosion proof mobile phone could sensibly be carried in Switzerland. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and still in certification, and Novartis has no relationship with SAMS. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone fits at Novartis in Switzerland

Most of a pharmaceutical company's Swiss workforce does not work in an explosive atmosphere, and it is worth saying so plainly. The Novartis Campus in Basel is predominantly offices, laboratories and research space, and the classified areas are specific rooms rather than whole buildings: chemical development laboratories, solvent stores, pilot-scale equipment and the utilities that serve them. Stein, in the canton of Aargau, is the manufacturing site. It has historically carried solid oral dosage, injectable products and cell and gene therapy production, along with a grinding and mixing centre for chemical work, and Novartis has publicly announced changes to the manufacturing mix at Stein, so the current scope of each building should be taken from the company rather than from this page. The practical result is a small, specific population of people who really do need an Ex handset: laboratory technicians working with solvents, plant engineers, utilities and maintenance staff, and contractors on construction and refit projects. Where a dust or solvent area exists, such as powder handling or solvent-based coating, the classification sits in a site document and the handset is matched to it.

People and work patterns

Basel campus
Research, development and offices with specific classified laboratory and plant rooms.
Stein, Aargau
Production site for sterile and other dosage forms and cell and gene therapy.
Technical operations
Engineering, utilities and maintenance teams who walk classified areas daily.
Laboratory staff
Solvent use in chemistry laboratories, usually in fume cupboards and small volumes.
Construction contractors
Large rebuild and refit programmes bring outside crews onto live sites.
Shift working
Production areas run to shift patterns rather than office hours.

Where classification applies

Chemical development laboratories
Small-scale solvent handling with local ventilation.
Solvent stores and waste collection
Flammable-liquid storage and decanting areas.
Powder handling and coating
Dust and, where solvents are used, vapour in the same process room.
Utilities and boiler houses
Natural gas and other fuel gas supplies on a large campus.
Cleanrooms and sterile suites
Normally not classified; Ex handsets are not the answer there.
Offices and meeting rooms
Safe areas where an ordinary phone is the right tool.

What a pharmaceutical technical site asks of a handset

A device that is carried by few people into a limited set of rooms has to earn its place. These are the practical questions a Novartis engineer would put to it.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Clearly separate from the ordinary phone

The handset needs to be unmistakable, so nobody carries a personal phone into a classified room by mistake. Managing the IS-04Z1 through the company's existing MDM console lets IT keep it enrolled and distinguishable from the standard fleet.

Cleaning regimes that wear a seal out

Pharmaceutical areas are cleaned often and with strong agents. The IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at a plant that is wiped down daily; the cleaning agents approved by the site should be checked against the manual.

Switzerland in three languages

Basel and Stein are German speaking, but a group workforce is mixed. The interface is available in German, French and Italian, and Swiss rules require product information in the official language of the market.

Connected to the existing systems

Android 16 with Android Enterprise supports the managed applications a maintenance team already uses, such as work-order and permit tools, without a separate Ex-only platform.

Use cases · Novartis

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Basel and Stein.

Laboratory01

Solvent store inspections

An inspection of a solvent store records container condition, labels and ventilation status. A photograph and a time-stamped note go straight into the maintenance record.

Engineering02

Utilities and plant rounds

Utilities teams walk boiler houses, gas supplies and process plant. One handset carries the checklist, the camera and the call to the control room.

Projects03

Contractor refit works

Rebuild programmes put contractors into areas that are still partly classified. A managed handset carries the permit, the area drawing and the daily report.

Questions · Novartis

Frequently asked questions

Is the whole Novartis Campus a hazardous area?

No. The campus is mostly offices and laboratories, and classification applies to specific rooms and plant. The IS-04Z1 is for the people who work in those rooms, not for the general workforce.

How would a pharmaceutical operator assess an Ex handset?

We do not know Novartis's internal process and have not been through it. Ask its EHS and procurement teams for the equipment approval requirements, the area classification documents and the data protection conditions that apply to a handset with a camera.

Who inspects explosion protection on a Swiss pharmaceutical site?

The employer is responsible under the Swiss accident prevention framework. SUVA, as accident insurer for most industrial employers, publishes the explosion protection guidance that safety officers use, and ESTI supervises electrical installations in zones.

Does the IS-04Z1 replace the radio network?

It is a smartphone, not a replacement for any site radio or alarm system. What it adds is data, camera and navigation. Any dependency on a site's own radio or paging system should be checked with its telecoms team.
