Visp, in the upper Valais, is the largest and oldest site in Lonza's global network. The IS-04Z1 is being certified for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty, and nothing here is a claim that Lonza has bought, tested or endorsed it. Visp sits on the floor of the Rhone valley in the canton of Valais, where Lonza has made chemicals for more than a century. Lonza itself describes the site as the largest in its network of more than thirty, and the products made there span mammalian and microbial biopharmaceuticals, small molecules, highly potent active ingredients, peptides and bioconjugates including antibody-drug conjugates. Press coverage puts the Valais workforce at around five thousand people, which is a useful reminder that the handset question here is a fleet question, not a pilot-of-ten question. The hazard mix follows the product mix. Small-molecule and peptide chemistry brings solvent charging, distillation, hydrogenation and drying, where flammable vapour is a Zone 1 or Zone 2 question depending on the process and the ventilation. Biologics suites are largely clean, but they use alcohols and other flammable liquids in buffers, cleaning and downstream steps. Potent-compound and powder handling adds dust areas, often metres from a vapour area. How each room is classified is the site's call, documented in its own explosion protection document, and a handset has to be matched to that paper rather than to a general idea of a chemical plant.
Visp is a validated, multilingual, multi-contractor environment in a mountain valley. These are the points an engineering or EHS reviewer there is most likely to raise.
Where the nearest safe charging point is outside the building and behind a gowning step, battery life is a working constraint. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a full shift with the camera and a work-order application open.
Powder handling places a Zone 21 area close to a Zone 1 vapour area. The IS-04Z1 is designed against both, with a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so a technician does not swap devices at an airlock.
The workforce speaks German, French and English as a matter of routine. The Android 16 interface is available in German and French, and the safe-use instructions need to be in the language of the person carrying the device.
A pharmaceutical site controls what is photographed and where it is stored. Android Enterprise management lets the site's IT team switch camera use off by area or profile, and the 50 MP camera is there for the fault report that is allowed.
A round through a solvent charging and filtration area means checking readings, photographing a seal and raising a defect without leaving the classified room to find a terminal.
Between campaigns a suite is cleaned, opened and requalified. Maintenance crews and contractors need the work permit, the isolation list and a photograph record on a device that is allowed inside.
An EHS officer attending an alarm needs to call the control room, record the location and photograph the cause. A single managed handset replaces the personal phone left at the gate.
We have not been through a Lonza supplier process and will not pretend to describe one. In general, ask the site's procurement and EHS teams for their equipment approval requirements, the area classification the device will be used in, and the documents they want alongside the certificate, including the manual and declaration of conformity in the language of the site.
Not a separate one. Switzerland applies the VGSEB, SR 734.6, which mirrors ATEX 2014/34/EU, and the mutual recognition agreement with the EU means a conformity assessment by a notified body is recognised. Our ATEX and IECEx work is in progress and no certificate has been issued yet.
Whether a device may enter a validated room is a decision for the site's quality and EHS functions. IP68 sealing is designed to tolerate wipe-down, and management through an existing MDM console gives the site control over which applications and data the handset can reach.
