Humidity, typhoons and salt air
Japan’s coastal petrochemical sites face heavy summer humidity, typhoon-season storms and salt-laden air. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified with that combined exposure in mind.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Japan every shift: refinery and petrochemical-complex operators, LNG terminal crews, inspection engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. It is pre-launch, so what you can have today is the datasheet, the certification schedule and an evaluation unit.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and TIIS programme in progress
Japan’s classified-area workforce is concentrated in a handful of large coastal industrial complexes rather than spread across a wide geography.
Operators and contractors such as ENEOS, Idemitsu Kosan and Cosmo Oil need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Kashima, Mizushima and Chiba / Sodegaura. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.
Japan’s coastal industrial complexes combine humid summers, typhoon exposure and some of the most rigorous site engineering standards anywhere. These are the points a Japanese evaluator presses on, and how the design answers them.
For evaluators in Japan, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Humidity, typhoons and salt air; High site-engineering standards; A battery for large integrated-complex rounds; Japanese and English on one build; Managed like the rest of the fleet.
Japan’s coastal petrochemical sites face heavy summer humidity, typhoon-season storms and salt-laden air. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified with that combined exposure in mind.
Japanese operators are known for rigorous internal engineering review that often exceeds the certificate minimum. Build quality and documentation are prepared with that scrutiny in mind, not just the IECEx threshold.
A round at a site the scale of Kashima or Yokkaichi covers real distance with no recharging point inside a classified area. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified for a full shift.
Operations run predominantly Japanese-language, with English needed for international contractors and technical documentation. Android 16 carries both interface languages on the same handset.
EMM and MDM enrolment pushes the corporate profile and camera policy centrally, matching how large Japanese operators already manage their device estates.
IECEx certification is the technical basis Japan’s Technology Institution of Industrial Safety (TIIS) works from. TIIS Ex certification is being pursued alongside launch.
Conformity in Japan runs through the Technology Institution of Industrial Safety (TIIS), the country’s Ex certification body, operating under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) framework for industrial safety. For hazardous-area equipment the technical evidence behind that certification is typically aligned with an IECEx Certificate of Conformity, and because this product is a phone it also needs Giteki (Technical Regulation Conformity Certification) approval from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. None of the three is finished yet.
Getting past the plant gate is a separate exercise. ENEOS, Idemitsu and the major petrochemical operators each run their own detailed engineering-approval process for equipment entering a classified area, and supply is normally expected to run through a Japan-registered partner. A device can be fully TIIS-certified and still be unlisted on an operator’s own approved-equipment register, so plan for two timelines rather than one.
A process operator walking a unit round at a large Japanese refinery needs to log readings, photograph equipment and stay in contact with the control room. During a turnaround, contractor traffic and permit volume both increase sharply.
Large integrated petrochemical complexes combine multiple classified units on one site. Four-constellation GNSS and a rugged, sealed build suit continuous movement across a complex of that scale.
LNG import terminals and adjoining gas-fired power plants sit inside Zone 1 gas atmospheres directly on the coastline, where salt air and humidity compound the sealing requirement.
The IS-04Z1 launches in Q4 2026. None of these steps needs a purchase order, and they are ordered so that your approvals and our certification run in parallel.
Give us the zone, gas group and temperature class for the areas a device would enter, plus the operator whose approval you work under. That is enough for us to say plainly where certification stands against your requirement.
You receive the full specification and a written list of the certifications in progress with target dates. An HSE officer can start an equipment selection justification with it, and procurement can open a vendor file.
Evaluation units will be offered to Japanese operators and contractors for handling and MDM trials in safe areas, moving to classified-area pilots once the certificate exists.
Procurement processes at ENEOS, Idemitsu and other major operators favour a locally registered supplier who can hold the TIIS documentation. Evaluation quantities can be supplied directly while that channel is appointed.
Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.
Ask about Japan →Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and every certification behind it, including IECEx, ATEX and the TIIS route, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. What exists today is the datasheet, the certification schedule and a place in the evaluation programme.
We do not publish one. Until certification completes there is no list price, and pre-launch pricing is available on request against a stated quantity and site.
That decision belongs to each operator and follows the certificates rather than preceding them. TIIS certification and the underlying IECEx evidence are what their engineering review is built on.
Yes. Android 16 runs the interface in Japanese or English on the same handset and the user manual will be issued in both.
It is designed to, with IP68 sealing and rugged build behind it, covering the humidity and storm exposure typical of Japan’s coastal industrial sites.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Japan. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
SAMS is appointing Japanese safety and instrumentation distributors who already hold vendor numbers with major refiners or petrochemical operators. Tell us which operators you are registered with and which tenders you bid.
