Explosion proof mobile phone for Versalis in Italy

Explosion proof mobile phone for Versalis in Italy: this page is for the safety, maintenance and procurement teams at Versalis, Eni’s chemicals company, whose Italian plants at Brindisi, Priolo, Ravenna and elsewhere handle monomers, polymers and elastomers. It covers what those hazards mean for a handset and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified to do. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified across Versalis plants in Italy

Versalis is the chemicals arm of Eni, and its Italian sites are built around a few linked families of product: ethylene and propylene from cracking, polyethylene and styrenics made from them, and synthetic rubbers. The plants named on this site are Brindisi in Puglia, Priolo in Sicily and Ravenna in Emilia-Romagna, and the company also runs sites at Mantova and Ferrara. Press reports say the Brindisi and Priolo steam crackers have been or are being shut down as part of Eni’s restructuring of its chemicals business, so confirm what is running at each site before assuming a unit is live. What does not change is the character of a chemical complex: monomers that are heavier than air, hydrogen in the same utility corridor, and polymer or rubber powder in finishing and bagging halls. A shift covers both Zone 1 gas areas and Zone 21 dust areas inside one fence, which is why a single handset rated for both matters here.

Versalis sites and products

Brindisi
Petrochemical site in Puglia; the steam cracker has been the subject of closure announcements, so check current status.
Priolo Gargallo
Sicilian site in the Siracusa industrial pole, next door to refineries and sharing infrastructure with them.
Ravenna
Elastomer and synthetic rubber production in the Ravenna industrial area.
Mantova
Styrene and polystyrene chain on the Mincio side of the Po valley.
Ferrara
Polyethylene production and the company’s long-established research centre.
Contractors on site
Maintenance, scaffolding and inspection firms in long-term service contracts as well as shutdown crews.

Hazards a handset meets

Ethylene and propylene
Light olefins in gas phase; ethylene falls in gas group IIB, so IIB capability is needed in cracking and polymer units.
Hydrogen
Used in hydrogenation steps and utility headers; brings gas group IIC into the classification.
Butadiene and styrene
Monomers handled in storage and reaction areas, including at rubber and styrenic plants.
Solvents and hexane
Present in solution polymerisation and washing, with flammable vapour near pumps and filters.
Polymer and rubber powder
Fine particulate in drying, conveying and bagging halls; the Zone 21 case.
Flare and blowdown
Zones that can change during an upset or a start-up, with exclusion areas set by the permit.

What a Versalis plant does to a handset

Chemical plants differ from refineries in how often the hazard changes. A unit can be gas-hazardous on Monday and a dust hazard on Thursday, after a changeover. Four conditions matter most for a handset.

Gas and dust in one round

A technician at Ravenna or Mantova may check a pump in a gas area and then enter a finishing hall with polymer or rubber dust. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust under one certification programme, so the person does not swap devices at the hall door.

Ethylene and hydrogen both in play

Light olefins and hydrogen sit at the demanding end of the gas groups. The target marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is aimed at that end, and the datasheet will carry the actual group and temperature class once the certificate is issued.

Plants in transition

Where a cracker has been or may be closed, units are being isolated, decontaminated and sometimes repurposed. Inspection and decommissioning crews working through that need photographs, GNSS positions and a reliable call to the control room, all on a handset that is allowed to be in the area.

Shared infrastructure with refineries

At Priolo, pipes, utilities and the road network are shared with neighbouring operators. A device managed from an existing console and locked to approved applications behaves the same wherever the contractor works that week.

Use cases · Versalis

Where an explosion proof mobile phone works at Versalis plants in Italy.

Operations01

Polymer and elastomer plant rounds

A round through reaction, drying and finishing covers gas and dust areas in one walk. One handset records readings, photographs a leaking seal and calls the shift supervisor without a trip to a safe area.

Maintenance02

Shutdown and decommissioning work

As units are stopped, cleaned and isolated, work orders multiply. Permit status, isolation photographs and sign-offs on one managed device keep the paperwork aligned with what was physically done.

Contractors03

Long-term service crews

Firms resident on a chemical site hold equipment for months, not days. Enrolment, application control and remote wipe let the plant issue and recover handsets in the same way it issues keys and badges.

Questions · Versalis

Frequently asked questions

Which Versalis sites are running crackers now?

We cannot say. Press reports describe closure of the Brindisi and Priolo crackers as part of Eni’s chemicals restructuring, but the site operator is the authority on what is running. Ask Versalis directly before relying on any description of a unit.

Does the IS-04Z1 cover ethylene and hydrogen?

The design target is gas group IIC, which includes hydrogen and covers the IIB gases such as ethylene. The certificate will state the group and temperature class, and the entry in your explosion protection document should use those figures once they exist.

What would Versalis procurement ask a handset supplier for?

Normally the ATEX and IECEx certificates, the declaration of conformity and manual in Italian, and evidence of a repair route that suits intrinsically safe equipment. Exact supplier qualification steps are set by Versalis and Eni; ask their procurement and HSE teams for current requirements.

Can I order a unit for a Versalis site today?

No. The device is pre-launch for Q4 2026 and its certification is in progress. Evaluation units are offered under a trial agreement, and nothing is supplied into a classified area before the certificate exists.
