Explosion proof mobile phone for Snam in Italy

Explosion proof mobile phone for Snam in Italy: this page is for the HSE, maintenance and telecoms staff who keep Italy’s gas transmission network, underground storage and LNG regasification running. It looks at the compressor stations, storage fields and terminals where a handset has to be safe, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified to do. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Snam’s gas assets are classified

Snam is a different kind of hazardous-area operator from a refinery. Natural gas is the only product, the network covers the whole country, and most of the plant is unmanned for most of the time. People arrive in vans to do a planned visit, an inspection or a repair. The transmission grid runs to well over 30,000 km of pipeline, fed at entry points such as Mazara del Vallo, Gela, Tarvisio, Passo Gries and the terminal at Melendugno where the Trans Adriatic Pipeline comes ashore. Along it sit compressor stations, metering and reduction stations, and the dispatching centre at San Donato Milanese. Underground storage is held by Stogit, in depleted fields such as Minerbio, Sergnano, Brugherio, Settala, Ripalta, Bordolano, Cortemaggiore, Sabbioncello and Fiume Treste. On the LNG side Snam owns Panigaglia and runs floating regasification units at Piombino and off Ravenna. The hazard is methane, gas group IIA, which is the least demanding gas group, but the surroundings are remote and variable.

Snam assets by type

Transmission network
High-pressure pipeline across Italy, with compressor, metering and pressure reduction stations.
Entry points
Cross-border and import connections such as Tarvisio, Passo Gries, Mazara del Vallo, Gela and Melendugno.
Stogit storage
Depleted-field storage including Minerbio, Sergnano, Brugherio, Settala, Ripalta, Bordolano, Cortemaggiore, Sabbioncello and Fiume Treste.
Panigaglia
LNG terminal at La Spezia owned by Snam; check its current operating status with the operator.
FSRU Piombino and Ravenna
Floating storage and regasification units moored at Piombino and offshore Ravenna.
Minority terminal interests
Stakes in the FSRU off Livorno and in the Adriatic LNG terminal off Porto Levante.
Dispatching
San Donato Milanese, a safe-area control centre where remote faults are first seen.

Classification by activity

Compressor stations
Gas turbine and gas-engine halls with ventilation, and open areas around knock-out and vent stacks.
Metering and reduction stations
Small fenced sites with regulators and filters, where gas can vent under maintenance.
Storage well pads and plants
Wellheads, dehydration and compression in a storage centre; most of it Zone 2, with Zone 1 near vents and relief.
Pig traps
Launcher and receiver barrels, where opening a trap creates a short-lived release.
LNG ship and jetty areas
Cryogenic methane, manifold and loading arm zones with berth schedules.
Smaller vent and drain points
Maintenance releases that set up a temporary exclusion zone for the job.

What Snam’s network does to a handset

A transmission operator’s technicians travel more than they walk. The handset has to work at an unattended station, on an offshore vessel and in an office, and carry data for all three.

Remote stations with no one else on site

A technician alone at a reduction station needs to call for help, share a position and record the job. Four-constellation GNSS and cellular connectivity on a Zone 1 device cover that, and a lone-worker application can be pushed from the existing console.

Frequent short visits

A van may visit six sites in a day, each with a short job in a classified area. A 4,000 mAh battery matters because there is no charge point at a metering station and a handset that flattens on the third site is useless.

Methane is the baseline, not the limit

Natural gas is gas group IIA, and the IS-04Z1 target is the broader IIC. Any odorised or mixed gas, or a site with hydrogen blending trials, is covered by the same marking, which spares a re-selection of equipment.

Inspection evidence

Statutory checks and pipeline integrity inspections produce photographs and readings that are audited later. The 50 MP camera and position fix put a legible image and a coordinate on the record, and Android Enterprise policy can control where and when the camera is used.

Use cases · Snam

Where an explosion proof mobile phone works across Snam’s network in Italy.

Transmission01

Compressor and metering station visits

A technician arrives at a compressor station, enters a permit, checks the vent stack and photographs a gland. The handset carries the permit, the checklist and the call to the dispatching centre.

Storage02

Storage field wellheads and plants

Inspection of wellheads and dehydration plant at a field such as Minerbio happens across wide pads. One managed device replaces radio, camera and paper, and shows the person’s position to the site supervisor.

LNG03

Regasification terminals

Berth operations at a floating unit rely on a small crew and a tight schedule. A handset that holds the checklist, the position fix and a push-to-talk style call helps a crew reach the control room from the jetty.

Questions · Snam

Frequently asked questions

Which Snam sites does this cover?

The page lists the main asset types and named storage fields and terminals. Individual compressor, metering and storage sites differ, and the zone map for each is held by Snam. The handset is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; the specific zone at a given site is Snam’s call.

Is hydrogen blending relevant to the handset?

It can be. Methane is gas group IIA, hydrogen is IIC, and the IS-04Z1 is being certified to IIC, so the same device is designed to remain suitable if a station’s gas mix changes. Snam’s classification documents decide what is required.

Does Snam have its own supplier qualification?

Large utilities normally do, and Snam’s contractors work to its health and safety rules. We have no relationship with Snam. Ask its procurement and HSE teams what registration and equipment evidence they require.

When can a Snam team evaluate one?

The device is pre-launch for Q4 2026 and certification is in progress. Evaluation units are available under a trial agreement, and use in a classified area waits for the certificate.
