Explosion proof mobile phone for Eni in Italy

Explosion proof mobile phone for Eni in Italy: this page is for the HSE, instrumentation and procurement staff at Eni’s refining, biorefining and upstream sites, from the Po valley to Sicily and the Basilicata hills. It sets out what a handset has to cope with at each site, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified to do. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Eni’s Italian sites are classified

Eni’s Italian footprint is not one kind of plant. The oil-products side runs three company-owned refineries, at Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi in the province of Pavia, at Taranto and at Livorno, and holds half of the Milazzo refinery in Sicily. Alongside them sit two biorefineries on former refinery land, Porto Marghera at Venice and Gela, which turn vegetable oils and waste feedstock into hydrotreated fuel. Upstream, the Centro Olio Val d’Agri at Viggiano in Basilicata treats crude and associated gas that carry hydrogen sulphide, and the crude goes on by pipeline to Taranto. Each of these puts a different hazard in front of a handset: hydrocarbon vapour and hydrogen in a refinery process area, sour gas at an oil centre, flammable liquids in tank farms and loading areas. In practice most of a shift’s walking is inside a classified boundary, and the safe-area office or charging point is a vehicle ride away.

Eni sites in Italy

Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi
Refinery in the Po valley, province of Pavia; one of three Eni-owned refineries in Italy.
Taranto
Refinery in Puglia; the main product hub for south-east Italy and the destination for Val d’Agri crude.
Livorno
Tuscan refinery known for lubricants and specialities; a biorefinery conversion has been announced, so check its current status.
Milazzo
Sicilian refinery in which Eni holds a 50 per cent share.
Porto Marghera, Venice
Biorefinery opened in June 2014 on a former refinery, using Eni’s Ecofining process.
Gela
Biorefinery on the former Gela refinery site, with a stated 750 kt/y processing capacity.
Viggiano, Val d’Agri
Centro Olio Val d’Agri, in operation since 2001, treating crude and gas for the national network.

Classified duties on those sites

Hydrotreating units
Hydrogen is in the process stream, which brings gas group IIC into the area classification.
Sour gas and crude handling
Hydrogen sulphide at the oil centre calls for tight control of ignition sources and gas detection.
Tank farms and bunds
Floating-roof and fixed-roof tanks with flammable vapour at roof level and in the bund.
Loading gantries
Road-tanker and rail loading, where vapour recovery and earthing define the Zone 1 boundary.
Flare and relief systems
Areas that can change classification during an upset, with temporary exclusion zones.
Pipeline pig stations
Receiving and launching traps, where opening a trap creates a short-lived release.
Control rooms and offices
Safe areas, which is where a handset is charged and handed over.

What an Eni site does to a handset

National certification is the gate. After that the plant decides how long a handset survives a shift. Four conditions come up repeatedly on Eni-type sites, and each one maps to something the IS-04Z1 is being designed around.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Hydrogen service next to hydrocarbon service

A biorefinery hydrotreater adds hydrogen to a site that already handles diesel and naphtha. The IS-04Z1 is being certified to gas group IIC, which is the group that covers hydrogen, so one handset serves both areas instead of two device types being issued.

Rounds that cross several area boundaries

An operator at Sannazzaro or Taranto walks from a safe-area control room through process units, tank farms and loading bays in a single round. A Zone 1 handset that stays powered for the whole shift, with a 4,000 mAh battery, avoids a charging stop inside the boundary.

Weather, washdown and dust

Taranto and Gela are coastal and exposed, and biorefinery feedstock handling can raise product dust. IP68 sealing is aimed at rain, washdown and fine particulate, and Zone 21 dust is part of the same certification programme as the gas marking.

Photographs that go into a permit record

A hot-work or isolation photograph is only useful if it is legible and tied to a place. The 50 MP camera and four-constellation GNSS give the permit a clear picture and a coordinate, and Android Enterprise policy can restrict the camera by area if the site requires it.

Use cases · Eni

Where an explosion proof mobile phone works for Eni in Italy.

Refining01

Turnaround at a Po valley or Puglia refinery

A planned shutdown brings contractor crews from outside the region into the units for a few weeks. A managed handset carries the permit, the isolation list and the sign-off photographs, and is recovered and wiped when each crew demobilises.

Biorefining02

Feed changeovers and hydrogen leak checks

Operators at Porto Marghera and Gela handle vegetable-oil and waste feedstock as well as hydrogen. A handset that can record a reading, take a photograph of a flange and reach the control room without leaving the area keeps checks inside the permit.

Upstream03

Rounds at an oil treatment centre

At a centre such as Viggiano the round covers separation, stabilisation, gas treatment and the export route. One device for voice, photographs and position removes the radio, the camera and the paper log from the person carrying them.

Questions · Eni

Frequently asked questions

Does Eni run its own supplier approval on top of ATEX?

Large operators normally do. Eni has a supplier qualification process run through its procurement function, and individual sites add their own HSE and telecoms review. We have not been through it, so ask Eni’s procurement and HSE teams what they require before a handset is brought on site.

Which Eni sites handle hydrogen or sour gas?

Hydrotreating units at the refineries and biorefineries use hydrogen, and the Val d’Agri oil centre handles associated gas that contains hydrogen sulphide. The area classification document for each site, not this page, decides which gas group and temperature class apply.

Is a handset for Eni sites available now?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, planned for Q4 2026, and its ATEX and IECEx certification is in progress. No unit will be supplied for a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists.

Can the handset be managed from the console Eni already uses?

It is designed to enrol in existing Android Enterprise management consoles, so camera, application and connectivity policy are set centrally. Whether Eni accepts that arrangement is a decision for its IT security team.

Enquiry · Eni

Ask about the IS-04Z1 for Eni, Italy

Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Italy. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
