Explosion proof mobile phone for ISAB in Italy

Explosion proof mobile phone for ISAB in Italy: this page is for the HSE, operations and maintenance teams at the Priolo Gargallo refinery on Sicily’s Ionian coast, around 320,000 barrels a day of crude on a single industrial site. It describes what a person carries into the classified areas there and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified to do. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified inside the ISAB refinery complex

ISAB S.r.l. runs the refinery at Priolo Gargallo, in the province of Siracusa, and its permits describe it as two refining plants, Impianti Nord and Impianti Sud, spread across the municipalities of Priolo Gargallo and Melilli. The site also includes an integrated gasification combined cycle plant, which gasifies heavy refinery residue to make syngas for power, so it brings hydrogen and carbon monoxide into the area classification as well as conventional hydrocarbon vapour. That combination is unusual. A walk across the site can pass atmospheric and vacuum distillation, conversion units, tank farms, a marine terminal and a gasification block, each with a different gas group and its own temperature class. The refinery sits inside the Siracusa industrial pole, so neighbours’ flares, pipe racks and roads are part of the working environment as well. Everything between the gate and the control rooms is a long walk in the open.

Parts of the Priolo complex

Impianti Nord
One of the two refining plants, with crude distillation and downstream conversion units.
Impianti Sud
The second refining plant on the same industrial pole, in Melilli municipality.
Gasification and power plant
IGCC block processing heavy residue into syngas; formerly operated as ISAB Energy.
Marine terminal and pipelines
Crude receipt and product shipment by sea, with loading arms and manifolds.
Tank farms
Crude and product storage covering large areas with floating-roof tanks.
Neighbours
Versalis’s Priolo plant is next door; see the page on explosion proof phone for Versalis.

Hazard types by area

Distillation and conversion
Hydrocarbon vapour, mostly gas groups IIA and IIB, with hot surfaces setting the temperature class.
Hydrogen and hydrotreating
Hydrogen service brings gas group IIC into process areas.
Gasification block
Syngas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide; carbon monoxide is also toxic, so gas detection is worn.
Sulphur recovery
Hydrogen sulphide in acid gas streams, where escape is a life-safety issue before an ignition issue.
Tank farm and bunds
Vapour at roof level and in the bund; Zone 1 around the roof seal and the vents.
Dust
Catalyst handling and petroleum coke or ash where present: a Zone 21 or 22 question.

What Priolo does to a handset

The refinery is in a hot, coastal, exposed corner of Sicily, and much of it is steel with no shade. Four conditions come up when people from the plant talk about a handset.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Summer heat on steelwork

Surfaces in direct sun and near process lines are hot for most of the day in a Sicilian summer. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class and ambient range on the certificate are the figures your instrumentation engineer checks against the area classification.

Salt air and washdown

Priolo is on the coast, so corrosion and salt spray work on every seam. IP68 sealing is intended to keep out water, spray and fine dust, and the device is designed to survive being dropped on grating.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the same shift

An operator who moves from a hydrotreater to the gasification block meets two hazard types. The device is being certified to gas group IIC, which is the group that covers hydrogen, and a personal gas detector still goes on the person for carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide.

A site where a spare is not a short drive

Priolo is a long way from the Italian mainland and from any specialist repair centre. A battery sized for the shift, 4,000 mAh, and a service route agreed in advance with a regional partner are as important as the certificate.

Use cases · ISAB

Where an explosion proof mobile phone works at ISAB in Italy.

Operations01

Process unit rounds

An operator covers distillation, conversion and utilities on a fixed route, logging readings and photographing anything abnormal. A Zone 1 handset carries the photograph, the position and the voice call to the control room together.

Turnaround02

Planned shutdown of a plant

During a major stop, hundreds of contractor staff work to permits issued at the start of the shift. Managed handsets hold the permit, the isolation points and the sign-off, and are collected and wiped when a contractor demobilises.

Marine03

Jetty and terminal operations

A crew at the marine terminal works with loading arms, hoses and ship-to-shore checklists. IP68 sealing and a camera that can be restricted by policy suit an area where spray is constant and photography is controlled.

Questions · ISAB

Frequently asked questions

How big is the ISAB refinery?

The existing figure for the site is around 320,000 barrels of crude a day, across the Nord and Sud plants. For anything that depends on exact capacity, such as a tender, use ISAB’s own published figures.

Does the IGCC plant change what a handset needs?

Yes, in principle. Syngas carries hydrogen and carbon monoxide, so the area classification there can require gas group IIC and a gas detector worn alongside the handset. The classification document for that block states the requirement.

Who approves a handset for use at ISAB?

ISAB’s own HSE, telecoms and procurement teams, working from the area classification and the certificate. We have no supplier relationship with ISAB; ask its procurement office what documents and qualification it expects before any equipment is brought on site.

Is the handset available for evaluation now?

Not for classified areas. It is pre-launch for Q4 2026 and certification is in progress. Evaluation units are offered under a trial agreement, and any trial in a hazardous area has to wait for the certificate that covers it.

Enquiry · ISAB

Ask about the IS-04Z1 for ISAB, Italy

Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Italy. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
