Remote and unattended sites
A technician at a reduction station is often alone, so a position fix, a call and a record of the job all matter. Four-constellation GNSS on a Zone 1 handset covers that, subject to coverage.
Explosion proof mobile phone for gas infrastructure in Italy: transmission pipelines, underground storage and the coastal and floating regasification terminals. This page is for operators, contractors and HSE teams who need to know what a handset has to survive in methane service, and what the IS-04Z1 is being certified to do. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
Italy imports most of its gas, so the system is built around entry points and storage. Pipeline gas arrives at Mazara del Vallo from Algeria, at Gela from Libya, at Tarvisio and Passo Gries from the north and, since the Trans Adriatic Pipeline began flowing, at the terminal near Melendugno in Puglia. LNG arrives at the Panigaglia terminal near La Spezia, the Adriatic LNG terminal off Porto Levante, the FSRU off Livorno and the floating units at Piombino and off Ravenna. Storage is in depleted fields in the Po valley and Adriatic regions, which carry the winter swing. Snam is the largest operator, as covered on the page on explosion proof phone for Snam, but it is not the only one: other companies run storage, terminals and distribution, and Eni’s own upstream gas comes ashore around Ravenna. The hazard is mostly methane, which is gas group IIA, so the classification is less severe than at a refinery. The difficulty is the number of sites, their remoteness and the changing contractor mix.
Gas sites are quiet most of the time and then busy for a day. The handset has to work after months in a van or a locker.

FSRUs and the terminal at Porto Levante are in open water, so spray and salt are constant. IP68 sealing is aimed at that, and the handset is designed to take a drop onto steel deck.
LNG vaporiser areas have extreme cold at the pipework and warm ambient air around it. The datasheet will state the operating range; check it against the conditions where a person actually stands.
Methane is gas group IIA and hydrogen blending is discussed in the sector. The IS-04Z1 is being certified to IIC, which includes hydrogen, so the same device is designed to stay suitable if gas mixes change.
A technician logs the visit, checks a vent and photographs a fitting. Permit, checklist and a call to the control centre sit on one device.
A small crew follows a checklist as a carrier berths and transfers cargo. A handset with camera, position fix and voice keeps the control room informed without leaving the deck.
A storage field has wellheads over a wide pad. One managed handset records readings, photographs and positions, and syncs when the person returns to coverage.
Named entry points, terminals and storage fields as examples, not a full list. The operator’s zone map decides classification for each site.
They need equipment suited to marine areas, with sealing against spray and a certificate for the zone where it is used. The vessel’s classification society and the operator define what is acceptable aboard.
Each operator, through procurement and HSE. We have no relationship with any of them; ask for current registration and equipment-evidence requirements.
No. It is pre-launch for Q4 2026, certification is in progress, and use in a classified area waits for the certificate.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Italy. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
