The company was established in 1974 and the first train was completed on 5 July 1977.
Bontang hosts the Badak LNG plant, owned by Pertamina and run by PT Badak NGL. It has eight liquefaction trains with a design capacity of 22.5 million tonnes a year, though only a few are in service. Liquefaction, storage and loading create Zone 1 areas. A rugged smartphone distributor in Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Bontang LNG. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.

Declining feed gas has cut output since 2001. Reporting in 2025 put only two trains in operation, with reactivation of Train F targeted for October 2028 as new gas arrives.
PT Pupuk Kaltim, set up in 1977, turns local natural gas into ammonia and urea with four ammonia and five urea units, about 1.85 million tonnes of ammonia and 2.98 million tonnes of urea a year.
The city's only airport is the private PT Badak Bontang Airport owned by Badak NGL, and its principal seaport is Loktuan Port, which was being expanded to relieve congestion at Balikpapan.
PT Badak LNG was established on 26 November 1974 as a joint venture with Pertamina, Total, Vico and Jilco, and it currently produces around 22 million tonnes of LNG a year, mostly exported to Japan.
Bontang grew from a village into an industrial city after Badak LNG was founded in 1974 and Pupuk Kaltim three years later, and it became an autonomous city in 1999.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan. Bontang's coast is hot and humid, so equipment faces moisture and sea air at jetties. IP68 describes ingress protection against dust and water. It is not an explosion-protection rating, so a handset still needs the right Ex marking for any classified zone it enters.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are lng liquefaction trains, lng and lpg storage tanks, gas pipelines, loading jetties. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan.
Yes. The same city hosts a large fertiliser complex making ammonia and urea, plus coal mining operations nearby. That gives gas, toxic-gas and dust risks within a short distance, so check which area type and which operator rules apply to your task.
Bontang has a private airport run by Badak NGL and the Loktuan seaport, but many visitors route through Balikpapan or Samarinda and travel by road. Plan extra time for customs clearance and for gate checks on electronic devices.
It can, because idle trains may be under different isolation and permit rules, and reactivation brings contractor crews back. Requirements follow the operator's current classification, so ask PT Badak NGL which areas are live. Confirm with the site operator before planning any trial.
