Climate
Hot, humid equatorial conditions on the East Kalimantan coast.
Bontang sits on the Makassar Strait coast of East Kalimantan and has only 160 sq km of land, of which about 32 percent of its administrative area is dry land, so industrial sites sit close to the sea and town. Liquefaction, storage and loading create Zone 1 areas. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof mobile phone for Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Ex marking | Group, category, protection concept, gas group, temperature class | II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 (target) |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC matched to the area drawing | IIC (target) |
| Temperature class | T-class below the ignition temperature of the gas | T4, 135 °C (target) |
| Where it applies | Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan: LNG liquefaction trains, LNG and LPG storage tanks, Gas pipelines | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Bontang LNG. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Hot, humid equatorial conditions on the East Kalimantan coast.
The company was established in 1974 and the first train was completed on 5 July 1977.
The city's only airport is the private PT Badak Bontang Airport owned by Badak NGL, and its principal seaport is Loktuan Port, which was being expanded to relieve congestion at Balikpapan.
PT Badak LNG was established on 26 November 1974 as a joint venture with Pertamina, Total, Vico and Jilco, and it currently produces around 22 million tonnes of LNG a year, mostly exported to Japan.
Bontang grew from a village into an industrial city after Badak LNG was founded in 1974 and Pupuk Kaltim three years later, and it became an autonomous city in 1999.
Bontang has a tropical rainforest climate with warm, stable temperatures and abundant rain, a drier period from about May to September and a wetter one from November to May.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Bontang LNG (Badak LNG), East Kalimantan. A marking check at Bontang would compare the label with zones assigned to trains, storage and jetties. Natural gas is typically IIA, with some process streams in other groups, so a reviewer reads the actual classification drawings. The target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, not approved.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are lng liquefaction trains, lng and lpg storage tanks, gas pipelines, loading jetties. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The main ones are LNG and natural-gas processing areas, ammonia and urea plants, and coal handling with combustible dust. Each operator classifies its own plant, so ask Badak LNG, Pupuk Kaltim or the mine for its zone drawings before bringing handheld devices on site.
Yes. A tropical rainforest climate with frequent heavy rain, warm stable temperatures and sea air tends to stress seals, connectors and chargers. Typically users specify good ingress protection and keep spare batteries and cleaning routines, subject to the plant's rules.
Jetties and coastal areas expose devices to heat, humidity and salt air. Check the rated temperature range, seals and charging contacts. Charge only in safe areas. Water and dust protection does not replace explosion protection. Confirm site practice with the operator.
