Rugged Mobile Phone in Brazil Refineries

Petrobras' REPLAN refinery at Paulinia, Sao Paulo, is the largest in Brazil at 434,000 barrels per day, and the 208,000 b/d REPAR refinery at Araucaria, Parana, is another major site in the 2024-28 plan. Petrobras operates about ten refineries in Brazil, including Replan at Paulinia (415,000 barrels a day), Revap at Sao Jose dos Campos and Reduc at Duque de Caxias, each with classified process, storage and loading areas. If you are specifying a rugged mobile phone for Brazilian refineries, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

Site conditions at Brazilian refineries: what wears and what limits equipment

Ownership has changed

Petrobras has sold some refineries (for example RLAM in Bahia and Reman in Manaus), so procurement rules differ by owner.

Spread across regions

Refineries sit in the south-east, south, north-east and elsewhere, so logistics differ by site.

More about Brazilian refineries that matters for portable equipment

Brazilian refineries: projects and investment

At the Gabriel Passos refinery (Regap) in Betim, Minas Gerais, capacity of 166,000 b/d is being raised by 25,000 b/d with start-up planned for 2027, and sustainable aviation fuel production is being introduced.

Brazilian refineries: who works there

The Abreu e Lima refinery in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, is being expanded with a new production line to refine heavy crude from the pre-salt region.

Brazilian refineries: who works there

Of eight refineries once offered for sale, only two were sold (Mataripe and the Manaus refinery), and Petrobras later resumed investing in the rest of its refining park.

Brazilian refineries: logistics and access

The same plan allocates 2.1 billion dollars to remove logistics bottlenecks, including expanding and optimising terminals and transport infrastructure that serve the refineries.

The term · rugged

What “rugged” means for a smartphone

A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.

The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.

In Brazilian refineries. Climate varies with location across the grouping, from the humid coast to inland sites. Dust, rain and heat all occur. IP68 gives a robust ingress rating, though it does not make a handset explosion-protected. The Ex marking is what the operator inspects, so keep it legible and intact.

Questions · Brazil Refineries

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a rugged mobile phone in Brazil Refineries today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does a rugged mobile phone in Brazil Refineries cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

How rugged is the IS-04Z1?

It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.

Which areas at Brazilian refineries would use it?

Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product tank farms, loading racks and jetties, hydrotreater and hydrogen units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

How are devices usually approved for Petrobras refineries?

Refinery contractors typically check Ex certification marking, temperature class and gas group against the area classification, plus local radio approval. The detail varies by site and contractor, so confirm the requirement with the refinery safety group and your contractor induction pack.

Do refinery turnarounds change the device requirements?

Often. During shutdowns and revamps, work shifts between live and isolated units, and permits define which areas are gas-tested. Many sites keep the same Ex requirement for the whole fence line to avoid errors, so confirm with the operator and the turnaround contractor.

When is the best time to deploy handsets at a refinery?

Maintenance shutdowns are a natural point, because large contractor workforces enter classified areas, and Reduc has shutdowns scheduled in 2026. Plan MDM enrolment and charging well before mobilisation. Confirm timing and rules with the site operator, as schedules change.
