Ownership has changed
Petrobras has sold some refineries (for example RLAM in Bahia and Reman in Manaus), so procurement rules differ by owner.
Of eight refineries once offered for sale, only two were sold (Mataripe and the Manaus refinery), and Petrobras later resumed investing in the rest of its refining park. Petrobras operates about ten refineries in Brazil, including Replan at Paulinia (415,000 barrels a day), Revap at Sao Jose dos Campos and Reduc at Duque de Caxias, each with classified process, storage and loading areas. Distribution partners for Brazilian refineries are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Brazilian refineries has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Brazil Refineries. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Petrobras has sold some refineries (for example RLAM in Bahia and Reman in Manaus), so procurement rules differ by owner.
Refineries sit in the south-east, south, north-east and elsewhere, so logistics differ by site.
Regap has a photovoltaic plant of 13,300 kW with about 20,000 solar panels, the first at a Petrobras refinery, and Petrobras plans 55.5 MW of solar capacity across its refining sites.
At the Gabriel Passos refinery (Regap) in Betim, Minas Gerais, capacity of 166,000 b/d is being raised by 25,000 b/d with start-up planned for 2027, and sustainable aviation fuel production is being introduced.
The Abreu e Lima refinery in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, is being expanded with a new production line to refine heavy crude from the pre-salt region.
The same plan allocates 2.1 billion dollars to remove logistics bottlenecks, including expanding and optimising terminals and transport infrastructure that serve the refineries.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Brazilian refineries. In the refinery context, explosion-proof is a casual term spanning process units, tank farms, loading racks and jetties. Fixed equipment may use flameproof Ex d, whereas a handheld relies on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed on the intrinsic safety principle and awaits certification.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Brazilian refineries. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product tank farms, loading racks and jetties, hydrotreater and hydrogen units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Brazilian refineries.
Process units, pump areas, tank farms, loading racks and sample points commonly contain Zone 1 or Zone 2 gas areas, often gas group IIA or IIB with hydrogen areas in IIC. The refinery's area classification drawings are the authority, so request them before specifying handheld devices.
Current plans point to Replan, Repar, Regap, Reduc, RPBC and Abreu e Lima, with revamps, hydroprocessing and sustainable fuels projects announced. Timelines can shift, so treat them as indicative and confirm scope and schedule with the operator or its main contractors.
No. Petrobras has sold some refineries, for example RLAM in Bahia and Reman in Manaus, so procurement rules differ by owner. Purchasing is usually through registered-supplier processes. Confirm equipment approval and documentation requirements with the site operator and its HSE team.
