Dense cluster
The industry occupies a compact area near the St. Clair River, so contractors move between neighbouring sites.
Sarnia, Ontario, is home to Chemical Valley, a cluster of refineries and petrochemical plants that Wikipedia puts at around 60 facilities. Imperial Oil, Suncor and Shell run refineries, alongside chemical producers, so process and storage areas are classified. If you are specifying an industrial smartphone for Sarnia (Chemical Valley), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.

Large pipelines bring Alberta crude oil to Sarnia, where refining and petrochemical production are mainstays of the local economy.
Sarnia's complex of refining and chemical companies is known as Chemical Valley and lies south of downtown, concentrating hydrocarbon and chemical processing in one district.
Sarnia had 72,047 residents in 2021 and is the largest city on Lake Huron, sitting at the junction of the Upper and Lower Great Lakes on the Canada-United States border.
In May 2024 a federal interim order under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act required Sarnia petrochemical facilities above a benzene fence-line threshold to use vapour control, including closed vent systems on certain benzene storage tanks.
A petroleum industry was established around Sarnia in 1858, and in 1942 Polymer Corporation made synthetic rubber there during World War II, cementing the city's role as a petrochemical centre.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Sarnia (Chemical Valley). Because contractors move between neighbouring sites, device fleets may belong to service firms as well as plant owners. EMM or MDM enrolment, with clear handover rules, helps. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Android 16 management. Charging would be in safe areas, and pipeline terminal sites should be checked for coverage.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, product storage and loading, pipeline terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The Blue Water Bridge and harbour make it a crossing and shipping location, but customs rules change. Confirm clearance arrangements for equipment crossing the border with a customs broker.
Lake Huron moderates temperatures but brings humidity and lake-effect snow. Sealed devices, winter ratings and a drying routine help. Confirm site guidance on temperature class and ingress protection.
Not automatically. Each operator approves equipment through its own HSE or electrical authority, and neighbouring plants may ask for different documents. A manufacturer certificate would help, but ask every site what it requires. Contractors who move between plants should check this before bringing devices on site.
