Wildfire history
The May 2016 wildfire forced the evacuation of about 88,000 people and halted production at facilities north of the city.
Fort McMurray in northern Alberta is the commercial and administrative centre of the Athabasca oil sands. Fort McMurray International Airport is the largest in northern Alberta, with flights to Edmonton, Calgary and Fort Chipewyan, and has been managed by the Fort McMurray Airport Authority since 2010. Distribution partners for Fort McMurray are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Fort McMurray has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Fort McMurray. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The May 2016 wildfire forced the evacuation of about 88,000 people and halted production at facilities north of the city.
Winters average about -17 degrees C in January with extreme lows below -50 degrees C, so cold-rated batteries and equipment matter.
The climate is borderline subarctic (Koppen Dfc) with severe winters except during chinook warm spells and only three months averaging above 10 C, so cold-weather performance of devices matters.
Hot-water extraction was first used by Abasands in the 1930s, and processing output reached over 1,100 barrels a day by World War II, long before large-scale mining began.
The Athabasca oil sands, around Fort McMurray, belong to oil-sand deposits that lie under about 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg in northern Alberta.
The Great Canadian Oil Sands plant, now Suncor, opened in 1967 and the town's population grew from 6,847 in 1971 to 31,000 by 1981 as more oil sands plants followed.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Fort McMurray. A procurement reviewer in Fort McMurray, where mines, extraction plants and upgraders lie north of the city, would expect certificate evidence set against the operator's zones. A dual ATEX and IECEx route would help contractors who also work internationally. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet; certification is in progress.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Fort McMurray yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are bitumen extraction plants, upgrader units, diluent and fuel storage, in situ processing facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Fort McMurray.
Typically upgraders, froth treatment, diluent and solvent systems, fuel storage and gas handling. Mines and camps are largely non-hazardous. Confirm the operator's zone map for the exact site.
Local planning is handled by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, while oil sands operations are regulated provincially. Confirm which approvals apply to your work with the operator or the municipality.
The May 2016 fire forced about 88,000 people to evacuate and halted production north of the city, so communications and evacuation planning are part of site safety. A managed phone can support that, but it does not replace alarms or muster systems. Ask each operator how devices fit into its emergency plan.
