Liquids-rich gas
The Montney and Duvernay formations beneath the area are sources of natural gas condensate and shale gas, so liquids-rich gas handling can be present at facilities.
Grande Prairie, in north-west Alberta, sits above the Montney and Duvernay formations and is a hub for natural gas condensate and shale gas activity. Alberta's corporate tax rate is 8 percent and its Petrochemical Incentive Program offers grants of up to 12 percent of eligible capital costs once operational, shaping investment in the Greenview area. An ATEX and IECEx mobile phone distributor in Grande Prairie would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Grande Prairie has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Grande Prairie. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The Montney and Duvernay formations beneath the area are sources of natural gas condensate and shale gas, so liquids-rich gas handling can be present at facilities.
Winters are very cold, with a record low of about -52 degrees C, so cold-rated equipment and batteries matter.
As a regional service hub the city hosts regional headquarters and service firms such as ARC Resources, Canadian Natural Resources, Schlumberger and Trican, serving northwestern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.
The Peace Region is Alberta's largest producer of natural gas and conventional oil, with over 8,600 oil and gas workers, including 2,007 in extraction and 4,218 in support activities.
The Duvernay extends under 130,000 km2, about 20 percent of Alberta, and is rich in natural gas liquids, which adds condensate and NGL handling to local facilities.
Grande Prairie was Alberta's seventh-largest city in 2021 with 63,166 people and is Canada's northernmost city with more than 50,000 residents, so winter conditions apply to most outdoor work.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Grande Prairie. A reviewer in Grande Prairie would expect certificate evidence suited to gas plants, compressor stations and wellheads, where condensate and shale gas are handled. A dual ATEX and IECEx route could help service firms who work for several operators across the region. The IS-04Z1 is in certification and holds nothing at present.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Grande Prairie yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are gas processing plants, well sites and wellheads, compressor stations, condensate handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Grande Prairie.
Yes, many oilfield service firms operate from the city serving a wide area, so shops, rentals and repair services are usually available locally. Confirm certification and servicing arrangements for certified equipment in advance.
Gas plants, compressor stations, wellpads, NGL and condensate handling and pipeline facilities are typical in Montney and Duvernay country. Exact classified areas are set by each facility, so confirm with the operator before bringing devices.
Coverage varies, because facilities are spread across a wide area. A managed handset may need offline-capable apps and scheduled synchronisation. Test connectivity at each site and ask the operator what network or radio systems exist. EMM or MDM policy should be designed around the weakest-coverage location.
