Liquids-rich gas
The Montney and Duvernay formations beneath the area are sources of natural gas condensate and shale gas, so liquids-rich gas handling can be present at facilities.
Grande Prairie, in north-west Alberta, sits above the Montney and Duvernay formations and is a hub for natural gas condensate and shale gas activity. With recently annexed land the city offers over 2,000 acres of greenfield industrial land and 6.1 million square feet of existing industrial space, easing the setup of service yards and workshops. An intrinsically safe mobile phone distributor in Grande Prairie would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Grande Prairie has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Grande Prairie. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The Montney and Duvernay formations beneath the area are sources of natural gas condensate and shale gas, so liquids-rich gas handling can be present at facilities.
Winters are very cold, with a record low of about -52 degrees C, so cold-rated equipment and batteries matter.
Grande Prairie was Alberta's seventh-largest city in 2021 with 63,166 people and is Canada's northernmost city with more than 50,000 residents, so winter conditions apply to most outdoor work.
Grande Prairie Airport is the largest in the Peace River Country, with 446,000 passengers in 2014, and has Air Canada Express and WestJet Encore turboprop flights to Edmonton and Calgary plus extra traffic from the local oil and gas industry.
Grande Prairie sits at the centre of the Montney and Duvernay liquids-rich gas plays; Montney output has doubled since 2012 and now makes up about a third of Western Canada's gas production.
As a regional service hub the city hosts regional headquarters and service firms such as ARC Resources, Canadian Natural Resources, Schlumberger and Trican, serving northwestern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Grande Prairie. Field rounds across wellsites, compressor stations and gas plants cover long distances between locations. A handheld intrinsically safe device allows operators to log readings and take photos at a wellhead without leaving the classified area. Permits and gas testing still follow the operator's procedures.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Grande Prairie. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are gas processing plants, well sites and wellheads, compressor stations, condensate handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Grande Prairie.
Yes, many oilfield service firms operate from the city serving a wide area, so shops, rentals and repair services are usually available locally. Confirm certification and servicing arrangements for certified equipment in advance.
Gas plants, compressor stations, wellpads, NGL and condensate handling and pipeline facilities are typical in Montney and Duvernay country. Exact classified areas are set by each facility, so confirm with the operator before bringing devices.
Coverage varies, because facilities are spread across a wide area. A managed handset may need offline-capable apps and scheduled synchronisation. Test connectivity at each site and ask the operator what network or radio systems exist. EMM or MDM policy should be designed around the weakest-coverage location.
