Cold climate
Winters are very cold, with a record low of about -52 degrees C, so cold-rated equipment and batteries matter.
As a regional service hub the city hosts regional headquarters and service firms such as ARC Resources, Canadian Natural Resources, Schlumberger and Trican, serving northwestern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Gas plants, compressor stations and well sites in the surrounding region contain classified zones. If you are specifying an IECEx mobile phone for Grande Prairie, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Grande Prairie: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Winters are very cold, with a record low of about -52 degrees C, so cold-rated equipment and batteries matter.
The city is described as the economic and transportation hub for a trading area of nearly 290,000 people, and oil and gas is among its major industries.
Grande Prairie Airport is the largest in the Peace River Country, with 446,000 passengers in 2014, and has Air Canada Express and WestJet Encore turboprop flights to Edmonton and Calgary plus extra traffic from the local oil and gas industry.
With recently annexed land the city offers over 2,000 acres of greenfield industrial land and 6.1 million square feet of existing industrial space, easing the setup of service yards and workshops.
Grande Prairie sits at the centre of the Montney and Duvernay liquids-rich gas plays; Montney output has doubled since 2012 and now makes up about a third of Western Canada's gas production.
The Peace Region is Alberta's largest producer of natural gas and conventional oil, with over 8,600 oil and gas workers, including 2,007 in extraction and 4,218 in support activities.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Grande Prairie. Grande Prairie is described as an economic and transportation hub for a trading area of nearly 290,000 people, so many service firms and visiting contractors pass through. IECEx documentation, including a certificate of conformity and schedule of conditions, gives them a shared reference. The IS-04Z1 is being prepared for it.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are gas processing plants, well sites and wellheads, compressor stations, condensate handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Northern Alberta has cold winters, so batteries, screens and cables need low-temperature ratings, and warm storage between jobs helps. Confirm the operator's winter equipment guidance and temperature class for classified areas.
They can, because condensate and NGL streams add heavier flammable vapours alongside methane, which may affect gas group and temperature class choices. Ask the operator for the classification drawing and choose devices to match.
Cold is a major constraint, since winters are very cold and a record low of about -52 degrees C has been reported. Battery performance and glove use are practical concerns for outdoor work. Check the datasheet's operating temperature range and plan insulated storage. The site operator can advise on winter working practice.
