QatarEnergy: industry on the ground
QatarEnergy runs all oil and gas activity in the state, from exploration and production through refining, transport and storage, so one organisation sets practice across the whole value chain.
QatarEnergy is the state-owned national oil and gas company of Qatar, renamed from Qatar Petroleum in 2021. It administers the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities and has interests across exploration and production, LNG, refining and petrochemicals. This page sets out how an IECEx smartphone supply route to QatarEnergy will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An IECEx smartphone for QatarEnergy cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Qatar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
QatarEnergy's Supply Management section describes vendor registration through its Mushtaryat Portal, which issues a SAP Vendor Code required for tender documents, and a Projects Preferred Manufacturers List (PML); confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

A second phase, North Field South, is planned to raise LNG output to 126 million tonnes a year from 2028, with international partners taking stakes alongside QatarEnergy.
Gas-to-liquids is part of the portfolio through the Pearl GTL joint venture with Shell and the Oryx GTL joint venture with Sasol, turning natural gas into diesel and naphtha.
Shell employed the first offshore drilling platform in the Eastern Hemisphere east of Qatar in 1955, an early sign of Qatar's long marine oil history that still shapes its offshore fields.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In QatarEnergy. At Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial Area, international operators, EPCs and visiting contractors tend to specify to IECEx. A reviewer should read the certificate of conformity with its schedule of conditions. The IS-04Z1 is designed for IECEx, and certification is in progress, so nothing can be supplied as certified.
There is no stock to order for QatarEnergy yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Large expansion projects are usually run through EPC contractors that apply the operator's specifications, so equipment may be approved by the contractor and the operator together. Ask the project team which standards, certificates and vendor lists apply to the work package before ordering.
QatarEnergy is the national company, but many plants are run by subsidiaries and joint ventures such as the LNG, refining and petrochemical operating companies. Each can have its own HSE rules and supplier registration, so confirm requirements with the operating company that controls the site you will visit.
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 dust and water protection and a 4,000 mAh battery. Operating temperature limits will be set by the final certificate and datasheet, so check them against Ras Laffan conditions before use. IP68 is not explosion protection. Confirm the area classification with the site operator.
