Qatargas: background
Qatargas was set up in 1984 as a joint venture with ExxonMobil and others. Its first three LNG trains, each designed for 3.3 million tonnes a year, were built in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Qatargas was established in 1984 and now trades as QatarEnergy LNG, a QatarEnergy company that develops and produces gas from the North Field and operates LNG facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City. The Laffan Refinery was inaugurated in 2010, and a major diesel hydrotreater was added during the Laffan Refinery 2 expansion, so condensate refining sits alongside LNG at Ras Laffan. This page sets out how an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone supply route to Qatargas will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Qatargas cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Qatar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

QatarEnergy LNG is part of the QatarEnergy group, whose Supply Management section describes vendor registration through the Mushtaryat Portal (SAP Vendor Code) and a Preferred Manufacturers List; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Qatargas was set up in 1984 as a joint venture with ExxonMobil and others. Its first three LNG trains, each designed for 3.3 million tonnes a year, were built in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
QatarEnergy LNG, formerly Qatargas, produces about 77 million tonnes of LNG a year from seven ventures, and has its headquarters in Doha with its upstream assets at Ras Laffan.
LNG leaves Ras Laffan on large Q-Flex and Q-Max carriers, and Qatargas also commissioned the Map Ta Phut LNG terminal in Thailand in 2011, so marine loading and berth operations are a core activity.
In August 2021 Qatargas completed the WHP12N platform jacket for its North Field Production Sustainability project, the first drilling support structure built in Qatar for Qatargas, at the Qcon yard.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Qatargas. A reviewer at Qatargas, now QatarEnergy LNG, would expect certificate evidence tied to the exact model and marking for LNG trains, offshore facilities and terminal operations. International contractors working at Ras Laffan often bring ATEX or IECEx papers, so a dual route helps compare them. The IS-04Z1 programme is in progress.
Supply of the IS-04Z1 to Qatargas starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
The site is a coastal desert location with high summer heat, humidity and salt in the air, plus dust. Check enclosure ingress protection, corrosion resistance and the operating temperature range of any device, and confirm area-specific rules with the operator rather than assuming one standard across all facilities.
Typically LNG liquefaction trains, gas treatment and sulphur units, helium and condensate handling, jetty and loading areas, and offshore platforms feeding Ras Laffan. The operating company classifies each area, so ask for the zone drawings, gas group and temperature class before specifying a phone or tablet.
According to the sheet, Qatargas was rebranded QatarEnergy LNG in September 2023 and is a QatarEnergy company operating LNG ventures at Ras Laffan Industrial City. Procurement and HSE requirements should be confirmed with the company. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and has no certificate.
