Hazardous Area Smartphone in Brazil Oil Platforms

This is a regional grouping of offshore production platforms and FPSOs in Brazilian waters, mainly in the Campos and Santos basins. The P-50 platform began production in April 2006 in the Albacora-Leste field of the Campos Basin, a milestone that made Brazil self-sufficient in oil production. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Brazilian offshore oil platforms, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

More about Brazilian offshore oil platforms that matters for portable equipment

Brazilian offshore oil platforms: people and language

The P-56 project created about 4,000 direct and 12,000 indirect jobs in Brazil, showing the scale of the domestic shipyard and fabrication workforce that supports offshore units.

Brazilian offshore oil platforms: infrastructure

The semisubmersible P-56 is anchored in 1,670 m of water at the Marlim Sul field, 120 km off the coast, tied back to 21 wells and rated at 100,000 barrels per day with 6 million cubic metres a day of gas compression.

Brazilian offshore oil platforms: who works there

Petrobras describes itself as producing about 2.99 million barrels of oil equivalent a day in 2025, and Brazil accounted for roughly 92 percent of its worldwide production in 2014.

Brazilian offshore oil platforms: rules and approvals

Under an ANP decision Petrobras operates several subsalt blocks and keeps a minimum 30 percent equity share in future licences, so most platform work still flows through Petrobras contractor procedures.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Brazilian offshore oil platforms. A grouping of Brazilian offshore platforms, mainly in the Campos and Santos basins, shares the same hazards: oil and gas process modules, wellhead areas, gas compression, cargo tanks and offloading areas. Each operator classifies its own units. SAMS does not classify any area.

Questions · Brazil Oil Platforms

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Brazil Oil Platforms today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Brazil Oil Platforms cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Brazilian offshore oil platforms would use it?

Likely candidates are oil and gas process modules, wellhead areas, gas compression, cargo tanks and offloading areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Do local-content rules affect equipment used on Brazilian platforms?

Local content has been a factor in Petrobras projects; the P-56 topside, for example, reached 72.9 percent domestic content. Handheld equipment is a small part of that, but confirm with the contractor whether any local-content or Brazilian certification requirement applies to your supply.

What approvals does Brazil typically need for Ex-rated radios and phones?

Typically two layers: conformity assessment for Ex certification (commonly through Inmetro-recognised bodies) and Anatel homologation for radio equipment. Requirements change, so confirm current rules with the operator and a local certification adviser before shipping to a platform.

How do handsets reach an FPSO or platform?

Equipment and crews move by supply vessel and helicopter, so spares and replacements need planning. Operators control access and often check or prepare devices onshore first. Confirm approvals, documentation and delivery routes with the operator and its contractors.
