Hazardous Area Mobile Phone in Montney Gas Field

The Montney Formation covers about 130,000 square kilometres of British Columbia and Alberta and is a major shale gas and tight oil resource. In northeast British Columbia some wells contain hydrogen sulphide, which makes gas sour, flammable and potentially deadly if inhaled, and Geoscience BC research maps where it occurs in unconventional reservoirs. If you are specifying a hazardous area mobile phone for Montney gas play, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

More about Montney gas play that matters for portable equipment

Montney gas play: geography and layout

The Montney Formation covers about 130,000 km2 in western Canada and could produce about 449 trillion cubic feet of natural gas with modern technology, making it one of North America's largest gas resources.

Montney gas play: logistics and access

Grande Prairie, a regional service hub, reports Montney output has doubled since 2012 and is a third of Western Canada's gas, projected to exceed half of national output by 2040.

Montney gas play: rules and approvals

A 2013 joint study by the National Energy Board, the BC Oil and Gas Commission and the Alberta Energy Regulator assessed the formation, and gas is produced in both provinces, so operators work under two regimes.

Montney gas play: geography and layout

The Montney is a Lower Triassic unit of dolomitic siltstone and sandstone up to about 280 m thick, which supports long horizontal wells.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Montney gas play. Classified areas include wellpads and wellheads, gas processing plants, compressor stations and condensate handling. The operator classifies them. No regulator was verified for the play, and it covers both British Columbia and Alberta, so ask the operator which rules apply to each site. SAMS does not classify areas.

Questions · Montney Gas Field

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area mobile phone in Montney Gas Field today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area mobile phone in Montney Gas Field cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Montney gas play would use it?

Likely candidates are wellpads and wellheads, gas processing plants, compressor stations, condensate handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Does sour gas affect device selection?

Hydrogen sulphide is a toxic hazard rather than an Ex rating, but sour sites add gas detection, breathing apparatus and rules for devices. Confirm requirements with the operator's induction team and ensure your device meets zone and gas group needs.

What hazards do Montney gas sites have?

Typically wellpads, gas gathering, compressor stations and gas plants with flammable natural gas, and some sites with condensate or sour gas. Classified areas vary by facility, so request the operator's classification drawing before bringing equipment.

Does the Montney supply LNG Canada?

Yes, gas from the Montney supplies LNG Canada through the Coastal GasLink pipeline. That link does not change the area classification at a wellpad, which the producing operator decides. A handset would still need to match the zone, gas group and temperature class assigned for that location. Ask the operator for the area data.
