Pipelines
Two pipelines of over 200 km link Habshan with Das Island, and the Habshan-Fujairah crude pipeline starts here.
Habshan, in south-western Abu Dhabi, is ADNOC Gas's largest processing complex, with five plants and 14 processing trains and 6.1 bscfd capacity. The pipeline route passes east of Abu Dhabi city, through Sweihan and west of Al Ain, so it crosses open desert for most of its length. If you are specifying a hazardous area mobile phone for Habshan gas complex, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Habshan gas complex: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Habshan Gas. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Habshan is the terminal station of the Etihad Rail network, and the site is remote desert with worker camps.
Habshan is an area in the south-western part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi that contains oil and gas fields and camps for oil workers.
The area is a major production centre for sulphur, a by-product of the oil industry, so sulphur handling and dust are part of site conditions.
Pipeline construction began in March 2008 and finished in March 2011; it became operational in June 2012, so its pump and metering stations are of 2010s vintage.
UAE handsets need type approval from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, which also required advanced mobile location testing for cell phones.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Habshan gas complex. Habshan's classified areas include gas processing trains, NGL and condensate handling, sulphur and acid-gas units and gas pipelines. ADNOC Gas classifies them, not SAMS. Much of the Habshan area is designated Red Zone for hydrogen sulphide, so area classification and sour gas safety rules sit side by side.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are gas processing trains, ngl and condensate handling, sulphur and acid-gas units, gas pipelines. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
About 406 km, with a 48-inch diameter and a capacity of 1.5 million barrels a day, passing east of Abu Dhabi city, through Sweihan and west of Al Ain. Pumping and metering stations along it have their own classified areas, set by the operator.
Yes. As a controlled oil and gas area with worker camps, access is managed by the operator, normally through registered contractors with induction and permit procedures. Confirm current requirements for portable electronic devices and gas detection with the operator's HSE team.
Much of the Habshan area is designated Red Zone because of hydrogen sulphide, so site-specific safety controls apply. These are separate from explosion protection, and are set by ADNOC Gas. Ask the operator what is required for a device and for personnel in those areas.
