Borouge: who works there
In March 2025 ADNOC and OMV announced the merger of Borouge with Borealis and the acquisition of NOVA Chemicals, creating a polyolefins group ranked fourth in the world by capacity.
Borouge was founded in 1998 as a polyolefins joint venture of ADNOC and Borealis, and in 2022 it listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, raising about 2 billion US dollars. Since 31 March 2026 Borouge Plc has been part of Borouge Group International AG, formed from Borouge, Borealis and NOVA Chemicals. Buyers searching for an explosion proof smartphone supplier for Borouge can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof smartphone for Borouge cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in United Arab Emirates. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Borouge's e-procurement page directs suppliers to register on the ADNOC Commercial Directory (not applicable in Asia Pacific, where the local Borouge office is the contact); confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

Borouge was reported to have a workforce of more than 3,100 people, so the Ruwais plants run as a staffed industrial site with its own induction and permit practice.
In September 2026 the new XLPE plant at Ruwais delivered its first customer batch after performance testing, adding 100,000 tonnes a year and doubling the group's XLPE output in the region.
Borouge 4 includes a 1.5 million tonne ethane cracker, two Borstar polyethylene plants and a cross-linked polyethylene plant, so ethane and ethylene handling is central to the new units.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Borouge. An ethane cracker and polyethylene and polypropylene plants show how explosion-proof covers different concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed equipment, while intrinsic safety suits handheld devices. A phone relies on the second, and the target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, subject to certification.
There is no stock to order for Borouge yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Ethane cracker and polyethylene and polypropylene units typically have flammable gas zones around reactors, compressors and storage, and powder and pellet handling brings combustible dust zones. Borouge classifies each unit, so ask for the area drawing, gas and dust group and temperature class.
Since 31 March 2026 Borouge Plc has been part of Borouge Group International AG, formed from Borouge, Borealis and NOVA Chemicals. Supplier registration may now follow group processes, so confirm current requirements with Borouge procurement and HSE before assuming older procedures still apply.
The sheet's start-up status for Borouge 4 comes only from a search snippet, so it should not be assumed. It describes the Ruwais complex as being expanded with a new ethane cracker and polyethylene plants. Confirm current status with Borouge. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with no certificate.
