Climate
Mild winters and warm, wet summers; about 1,192 mm of rain a year.
Pohang has a humid subtropical climate, with a January mean of 2.2 degrees Celsius, an August mean of 26.0 degrees and about 1,152 mm of rain a year, peaking in August at around 227 mm. It is headquarters of POSCO, which has an integrated steelworks there, and steel plant gas systems and dust create classified areas. Distribution partners for Pohang are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Pohang has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Pohang. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

POSCO's Pohang plant was dedicated in 1973 and POSCO runs two integrated steelworks, at Pohang and Gwangyang.
Pohang is the largest city in North Gyeongsang Province, with 499,363 residents in 2022, on Yeongil Bay at the mouth of the Hyeongsan River facing the East Sea.
The steelmaker POSCO was inaugurated in Pohang in 1968 and its local plant began production in the early 1970s, bringing heavy industry to a city that had about 50,000 people in the 1960s.
The city is promoting itself as a diversified centre of environmentalism, advanced learning and culture, to reduce its reliance on heavy industry such as steelmaking.
Pohang's shipping port and road arteries made it strategically significant in the mid-twentieth century, and the port remains the city's sea gateway on the East Sea coast.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Pohang. In a steelworks, explosion-proof is a loose label. Flameproof Ex d fits fixed motors and junction boxes, while a handheld phone near by-product gas lines depends on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed around that concept, with certification in progress and POSCO's own rules deciding where it may be used.
A distributor for Pohang would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are steelworks process gas systems, coke-making and by-product gas, steel plant dust areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Pohang.
Winters are mild by Korean standards, with a January mean near 2 degrees, while summers reach about 26 degrees with the heaviest rain in August. Sea air and humidity are the main concerns, so devices typically need good sealing and routine cleaning.
Pohang is on the East Sea coast with a shipping port and road links, and most equipment arrives by road from other Korean ports or airports. Allow time for customs clearance and for site gate checks on electronic devices at the steelworks.
They can. Coke-making and by-product gas systems may contain gases such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide, which affect the gas group needed, and plant dust areas need a dust classification. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Ask POSCO which gas and dust groups apply.
