Das Island lies about 160 km off the mainland and houses roughly 6,000 rotating industry personnel, so access is controlled by the operator.
May to September is extremely hot and humid, with July and August maximums averaging above 40 C, and sandstorms can cut visibility to a few metres. ADNOC Gas runs the Habshan gas complex and Das Island, while ADNOC operates the Ruwais refinery, which can process up to 922,000 barrels a day, and Borouge runs polyolefin plants at Ruwais, all with classified areas. An explosion proof smartphone distributor in Abu Dhabi emirate would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Abu Dhabi emirate has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Abu Dhabi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Das Island lies about 160 km off the mainland and houses roughly 6,000 rotating industry personnel, so access is controlled by the operator.
Hot desert climate; outdoor work in summer needs heat-tolerant equipment and schedules.
Khalifa Port handles all of the emirate's container traffic since the move from Zayed Port was completed in December 2012; the port island is about 5 km offshore.
Abu Dhabi's urban area had about 2.5 million people in 2023, out of 3.8 million in the emirate, so most contractors and service firms are based in and around the capital.
ADNOC's drilling chemicals subsidiary, Abu Dhabi Drilling Chemicals and Products, has operated in Mussafah since 2007, so oilfield supply work is based close to the city.
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority in Abu Dhabi issues type approval; certificates are renewed every three years and a valid supplier register is needed.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Abu Dhabi emirate. Across gas trains, refinery units, petrochemical plants and offshore platforms, explosion-proof is used loosely. Flameproof Ex d enclosures protect fixed electrical equipment; a handheld phone is better served by intrinsic safety. Sour gas conditions in parts of the emirate make the operator's own area rules especially important.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Abu Dhabi emirate. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are gas processing trains, lng and gas processing on das island, refinery process units, ngl fractionation. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Abu Dhabi emirate.
Mostly not. The classified areas sit at the emirate's gas, refining and petrochemical complexes, many of them far from the city. The capital is where ADNOC, contractors and service companies are based, so buying and engineering happen here while hazardous-area work happens elsewhere.
From May to September it is extremely hot and humid, with July and August maximums above 40 C. Use a device with a stated operating temperature range, plan breaks in shade or vehicles, and ask the operator whether it sets its own limits for portable equipment.
Island and offshore sites such as Das Island are reached by air and sea, with rotating workforces. Deliveries and service are arranged through the operator, so allow lead time. Ask the operator's logistics or procurement team how equipment is shipped, and who handles repair or replacement.
