Joffre site
The site has five NOVA manufacturing facilities: three for ethylene and two for polyethylene.
Red Deer is a central Alberta city, and NOVA Chemicals' Joffre complex lies nearby. It is one of the largest ethylene and polyethylene complexes in the world, with flammable gas and liquid handling throughout. Distribution partners for Red Deer and Joffre industrial area are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Red Deer Industrial. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The site has five NOVA manufacturing facilities: three for ethylene and two for polyethylene.
A 431 kilotonne per year linear low density polyethylene unit expanded the site's polyethylene capacity by about 40 per cent.
NOVA Chemicals operates more than 385 km of pipelines across Alberta, carrying feedstocks and products between sites and customers.
Nearly 70 percent of Joffre's ethylene is used on site to make over 3.4 billion pounds of polyethylene a year, and the site is 21 km east of Red Deer on Highway 11.
NOVA Chemicals' Joffre site covers 900 acres, with three ethylene and two polyethylene plants, and employs over 800 permanent staff, about 350 resident contractors and up to 1,200 contractors during turnarounds.
NOVA Chemicals has combined with Borouge and Borealis to form Borouge International, so supplier and contractor registration may follow the new group structure; confirm with the company.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Red Deer and Joffre industrial area. Ethylene is a gas that often points to the more demanding gas group, so a marking check at Joffre would compare the group and temperature class on the device with the plant's data. The IS-04Z1 targets II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, but NOVA would decide whether it suits each unit.
A distributor for Red Deer and Joffre industrial area would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are ethylene plants, polyethylene plants, ethane feedstock handling, hydrocarbon storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Red Deer and Joffre industrial area.
Yes, about 21 km east on Highway 11, so Red Deer offers hotels, shops and service companies nearby. Confirm freight and customs paths if importing equipment, and check site gate rules.
Central Alberta winters are cold, so batteries and displays suffer at low temperature. Choose low-temperature-rated devices and confirm the operator's winter guidance and temperature class for outdoor areas.
Not without approval. Joffre lies between the two cities, so contractors can come from either, but the operator decides which devices may enter classified areas. A device would need suitable marking and often registration in the plant's system. Ask NOVA's HSE team for its contractor equipment rules.
