Central Alberta location
Joffre lies between Edmonton and Calgary, so contractors can be drawn from either city.
Red Deer expanded rapidly after major oil discoveries in Alberta in the late 1940s and became a centre for oil and gas and related industries, including the Joffre Cogeneration Plant. It is one of the largest ethylene and polyethylene complexes in the world, with flammable gas and liquid handling throughout. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof mobile phone for Red Deer and Joffre industrial area, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Red Deer and Joffre industrial area: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Red Deer Industrial. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Joffre lies between Edmonton and Calgary, so contractors can be drawn from either city.
The site has five NOVA manufacturing facilities: three for ethylene and two for polyethylene.
Nearly 70 percent of Joffre's ethylene is used on site to make over 3.4 billion pounds of polyethylene a year, and the site is 21 km east of Red Deer on Highway 11.
NOVA Chemicals' Joffre site covers 900 acres, with three ethylene and two polyethylene plants, and employs over 800 permanent staff, about 350 resident contractors and up to 1,200 contractors during turnarounds.
NOVA Chemicals has combined with Borouge and Borealis to form Borouge International, so supplier and contractor registration may follow the new group structure; confirm with the company.
Joffre Cogeneration is a 480 MW gas-fired combined-cycle plant commissioned in 2001 that supplies power, water and steam to the NOVA site and electricity to Alberta's grid.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Red Deer and Joffre industrial area. Ethylene is a gas that often points to the more demanding gas group, so a marking check at Joffre would compare the group and temperature class on the device with the plant's data. The IS-04Z1 targets II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, but NOVA would decide whether it suits each unit.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are ethylene plants, polyethylene plants, ethane feedstock handling, hydrocarbon storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typically cracker furnaces, ethylene and hydrogen areas, polymer reactors and powder handling with dust risks. Gas groups can reach IIB or IIC for hydrogen, and dust zones may apply. Confirm area classification drawings with the operator.
The site reports up to 1,200 contractors during turnarounds, so induction, permits and gate checks are structured. Confirm the contractor safety process and approved-device list with NOVA Chemicals before mobilising.
Ethylene is commonly treated as a more demanding gas than typical fuels, which is why a marking check at an ethylene plant looks closely at the gas group. The IS-04Z1 target marking includes IIC. The plant operator sets the gas group for each area, so request that data before any evaluation.
