The Ministry of Ports announced further oil jetties and a new cargo port to separate dry and liquid cargo, so project work is ongoing.
Kandla, officially Deendayal Port, handled 132.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2023-24, mainly liquid and bulk, and is described as India's largest port by cargo volume. Oil jetties and nearby tank farms handling flammable liquids, chemicals and LPG create hazardous areas. If you are specifying an Ex-proof mobile phone for Kandla (Deendayal Port), Gujarat, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Kandla (Deendayal Port), Gujarat: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Wikipedia describes oil jetties on the western bank of Kandla creek handling products from LPG and chemicals to edible oils. Oil Jetty No. 8 at Old Kandla, rated at 3.5 million tonnes a year, was inaugurated on 26 May 2025.
Visibility in the harbour is generally good through the year, with low visibility mostly during rain and storms, which helps outdoor marine operations.
The port authority operates at three locations along the Gulf of Kutch: Kandla Creek, Tuna Tekra and the offshore oil terminal at Vadinar.
The port was built in the 1950s as the chief seaport for western India and was renamed Deendayal Port in 2017.
Annual rainfall is only about 322 millimetres, mostly from the south-west monsoon between June and September, while April and May are the driest months.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Kandla (Deendayal Port), Gujarat. A marking check at Kandla should consider the range of cargo, from LPG and chemicals to edible oils, and the areas at jetties, tank farms and loading gantries. LPG and chemicals can sit in different gas groups. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which the operator must compare with its classification.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are oil and chemical jetties, liquid storage tank farms, tanker loading gantries, lpg handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Annual rainfall is only about 322 millimetres, but summer heat reaches around 40 degrees Celsius and coastal air carries salt. Check temperature and corrosion resistance on the datasheet.
Oil jetties, tank farms and liquid cargo terminals are the main classified areas because of flammable vapours. The port and each terminal operator define the zones, so request drawings and accepted approvals before taking devices to jetties.
Often yes. The port authority and each tank farm operator control their own areas and permits, so approval at one does not carry to another. Confirm with each operator which evidence, markings and permits it requires before a handheld is used on its premises.
