Free zone scale
Jafza, the flagship free zone of DP World, describes itself as home to over 11,000 businesses, including 532+ petrochemical-sector companies, so site rules vary company by company.
Dubai's industrial hazardous-area work centres on Jebel Ali, where the port, the Jebel Ali Free Zone and a power and desalination complex sit together. Dubai Industrial City, close by, adds manufacturing and logistics zones. Petrochemical and fuel-handling businesses in the free zone keep classified areas in use. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Dubai industrial areas, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Dubai industrial areas: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Dubai Industrial. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.

Dubai Industrial City is close to Jebel Ali Port, Al Maktoum International Airport and an Etihad Rail freight terminal, which eases delivery of equipment.
The wider urban area including Sharjah has around 5 million people and the Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman metropolitan area about 6 million, so labour and suppliers can be sourced across emirates.
It lies near Al Maktoum Airport along Emirates Road, so freight and visiting engineers can reach it without crossing central Dubai.
Port Rashid opened in 1972, Jebel Ali port in 1979 and the Jebel Ali Free Zone in 1985, so most of Dubai's heavy industry dates from the last five decades.
Dubai Industrial City, founded in 2004, covers about 52 square km, making it a separate large industrial estate from the Jebel Ali port area.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Dubai industrial areas. Dubai's industrial hazardous-area work centres on Jebel Ali, so a reviewer at DEWA, EGA or a free-zone fuel warehouse would look for certificate numbers, markings and schedules of conditions. A dual ATEX and IECEx route also suits international tenants and contractors working in the free zone. The IS-04Z1 certificates are in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are petrochemical and fuel storage and handling, power and desalination plant fuel systems, smelter and metal-processing plant, industrial chemical warehousing. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Food and beverage plants can have ammonia refrigeration and combustible dusts such as flour or sugar, while base-metal plants can have fuel gas, solvents and metal dust. Whether an area is classified is a site decision, so request the area classification documents.
No. About 92 per cent of Dubai residents are expatriates, so crews speak many languages and English is the common business language. Device screens, alarms and instructions work best with clear icons plus English, and any crew languages the employer specifies.
Summer highs average around 40 degrees C with high humidity, so heat tolerance matters for outdoor work. The IS-04Z1 is designed to IP68 with a 4,000 mAh battery, but no hot-weather limits are published here. Ask for the datasheet and keep devices out of direct sun where possible.
