Explosion proof mobile phone for Chemicals, Pulp and Cement in Portugal

Estarreja chemistry, the Navigator pulp mills and the Secil and Cimpor cement works are the places where an explosion proof mobile phone in Portugal has to cope with gas and dust together. This page is for the HSE and maintenance leads at those sites. The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with certification in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch.

Explosion proof mobile phone in Portugal: chemicals, pulp and cement areas

Three industries, three different hazards. At Estarreja, chlor-alkali and organic chemistry bring hydrogen and flammable liquids; see explosion proof phone for Bondalti. Navigator runs pulp and paper mills at Figueira da Foz, Setúbal and Aveiro, with recovery boilers, lime kilns, biomass handling and wood dust. Secil and Cimpor operate cement plants where coal, petcoke and alternative fuels are ground and fed to kilns. Gas areas are the main concern in the chemicals, while dust areas decide the outcome in the mills and cement works.

Operators and sites

Bondalti, Estarreja
Chlor-alkali and aromatics in the Estarreja complex.
Dow Portugal, Estarreja
Chemical production in the same industrial complex.
Navigator, Figueira da Foz
Pulp and paper, with large biomass and chemical recovery operations.
Navigator, Setúbal and Aveiro
Paper at Setúbal and pulp at Aveiro, both with recovery systems.
Altri
Pulp production at Figueira da Foz and in the interior.
Secil and Cimpor
Cement plants at Outão, Alhandra, Souselas and Loulé.

Classified areas

Wood yards and chip handling
Wood dust and fibre in conveyors, hoppers and transfer towers.
Recovery boiler and lime kiln
Black liquor, fuel gas or oil and flammable vent gases.
Coal and petcoke mills
Fine fuel dust with inerting and explosion-venting concerns.
Raw meal and cement silos
Mostly non-combustible dust, but with fuel dust in the neighbouring plant.
Solvent and chemical stores
Methanol, solvents and process chemicals in drums and tanks.
Chlorine and hydrogen areas
Hydrogen as group IIC; chlorine as a toxic, non-ignitable hazard.

What these plants do to a handset

A device for this sector has to survive airborne fibre, cement dust and wet cleaning while remaining legal in both gas and dust areas.

Dust gets into everything

In a mill or cement plant, fine powder settles on every surface and works into seams. IP68 sealing keeps it out of the housing, and a dust-rated device also means a layer on the surface does not become the ignition problem.

Mixed zones on one site

A pulp mill has a fuel farm, a solvent store and a wood yard within the same fence. One Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset covers the full walk, instead of two devices with two sets of rules.

Long routes and noisy plant

Kiln lines and recovery boilers are loud, tall and spread out. Four-constellation GNSS gives a position, and the 4,000 mAh battery is specified to last a shift without any recharge in the classified area.

Contractors between sites

Shutdown crews move between pulp mills, cement plants and chemical sites. A device whose certificate follows the person lowers the paperwork each time, though each operator still decides separately.

Use cases

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used in this sector

Pulp and paper01

Recovery boiler and wood yard rounds

Operators check conveyors, feeders and fuel lines in areas where fibre dust and flammable gas are both possible. A managed handset records the round and flags a hot spot with a photograph.

Cement02

Coal mill and kiln feed inspections

Fuel milling is the most sensitive dust task on a cement site. A Zone 21 device lets maintenance staff report a blocked line or a hot bearing from the place it happens.

Chemicals03

Plant rounds and shutdown work

In chemical plants, hydrogen and solvents are the ignition hazards, and chlorine is the toxic one. A single device helps crews at Estarreja report faults while observing the access rules for the toxic areas.

Approvals and access

What buyers in this sector will ask for

Each operator keeps its own contractor and equipment approval process, and we name none of them. The usual documents are the ATEX certificate for the device, the marking with its gas and dust categories, the temperature class, the maximum surface temperature for dust and a statement on servicing. Ask the procurement and HSE team at each site what they need before a new device type is allowed in. Sites handling hydrogen or methane should also look at explosion proof phone for hydrogen and LNG at Sines.

The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued, so no unit is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which matters more at a pulp mill, gas or dust?

Both appear, but the wood yard, bark and biomass fuel and lime handling are classically dust. The gas risk comes from fuel gas, solvents and black liquor vapours, so a Zone 1 and Zone 21 device is the right basis.

Is cement dust itself explosive?

Cement and raw meal are largely non-combustible. The risk comes from the fuel side, such as coal and petcoke, plus waste-derived fuels. The classification is made area by area, and the operator's explosion protection document decides it.

Can one device cover several operators?

The certificate belongs to the device, so it can be listed in more than one operator's file. Each operator still has to accept it, so contact each site separately.
