What is classified at Shell’s Pernis and Moerdijk sites
Pernis is the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, a refinery and chemicals complex in the Pernis area of the Rotterdam port, and Moerdijk is a separate chemical site on the Hollands Diep inland port, with the two connected by pipeline. They are different hazard profiles. Pernis is a refinery in the traditional sense, with hydrocarbon vapour, hydrogen circuits and large tank farms. Moerdijk is a chemicals plant, with olefins and their derivatives handled as gas and liquid at pressure. Wherever solids are handled, Zone 21 dust can appear alongside Zone 1 gas, and the Dutch zoning practice for them runs on NPR 7910-1 and NPR 7910-2.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shell Nederland publish what phone it allows?
Not that we have verified. Operators generally set equipment rules in their own HSE standards, which are shared with approved suppliers rather than published. Ask the site’s procurement and HSE teams.
Why does the Moerdijk site matter for a phone?
Wherever a chemical site handles solids, dust comes into the picture. A device for Moerdijk has to be considered for Zone 21 as well as the gas zones, which is why the Zone 21 design target is part of the programme.
Can one device serve both sites?
That is the aim. The marking string, once issued, shows which zones and gas group the certificate covers, and the engineers at each site decide whether it fits their zoning.
