Explosion proof mobile phone for Gas, Hydrogen and CO2 in the Netherlands

The Dutch gas sector has shifted from extraction to import, storage, hydrogen and carbon capture. This page is for HSE officers, commissioning engineers and contractors who need an explosion proof mobile phone for gas, hydrogen and CO2 infrastructure in the Netherlands, from LNG terminals to hydrogen pipelines and compression for carbon storage. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where gas, hydrogen and CO2 work is classified

Groningen production ceased in October 2023 and the field closed for good in 2024, so the hazard now sits in import, storage, hydrogen and CO2. Gasunie runs the transmission grid and is building the national hydrogen network, as described on our explosion proof phone for Gasunie page. The Maasvlakte holds LNG import, including the Gate terminal, and the site of Shell’s Holland Hydrogen 1 electrolyser project, and Eemshaven has an LNG terminal and power generation. Carbon capture projects such as Porthos will add compression and pipelines. Natural gas is group IIA, hydrogen is IIC, and CO2 is not flammable but is handled with flammable products.

Typical hazardous areas

LNG terminals
Regasification, vaporisers and ship connections, with cold natural gas.
Hydrogen pipelines and conversion
Converted and new pipelines where hydrogen is group IIC.
Electrolysers
Hydrogen production areas, where leaks form local zones.
Compressor stations
Gas and CO2 compression, with rotating plant.
Salt-cavern storage
Wellheads and compression at underground storage sites.
Control rooms
Safe areas where operations run.

New classified areas are being created faster than the standards for them are settled. These conditions follow from that.

Hydrogen needs IIC

Equipment marked only for IIB dates quickly in hydrogen work. The IS-04Z1 marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is aimed at IIC for that reason.

Small commissioning teams

New plant is commissioned by small teams. One handset that carries documents, camera and position replaces several tools.

Remote and dispersed assets

Pipelines and stations are spread out. Four-constellation GNSS and a 50 MP camera attach a position and photograph to each inspection.

Managed from the start

Android Enterprise lets the owner apply policy to new devices from day one, as new sites join the network.

How the work is organised on gas and hydrogen sites

Commissioning01

New hydrogen and CO2 plant

A commissioning team checks lines, valves and instruments in areas that are newly classified, often before the full operating routine exists. Loop checks, purge records and punch-list photographs all need a home, and a handset carrying drawings, photographs and a position record keeps them with the asset rather than in a contractor’s notebook.

Terminals02

LNG import

Terminal staff walk between ship connections, vaporisers and storage, often in cold, windy conditions at the waterside. The handset covers voice, camera and a lone-worker check-in on one device, so that a ship transfer can be reported from where it happens.

Network03

Pipeline and station inspection

Inspectors visit stations and valve sites on a schedule, many of them small and unmanned, recording results with photographs and positions. The record is only as good as the position it carries, so four-constellation GNSS is a working requirement, not an extra.

What operators would ask a supplier for

Each operator sets its own supplier requirements, and we have not verified specifics for any. The route is to ask the operator’s procurement and HSE teams. Below is what operators in this sector typically want.

Documents to prepare

Marking and gas group
The ATEX marking string, gas group IIC and temperature class once issued.
Dutch documentation
Manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity in Dutch.
Management guide
Enrolment steps for the MDM, with camera policy.
Service route

Questions · Gas, Hydrogen and CO2

Frequently asked questions

Is CO2 a hazard for a phone?

CO2 is not flammable, so it does not create a classified area by itself. Carbon capture sites do handle flammable products nearby, such as fuel gas and process streams, and it is those that set the zones. Compression plant and pipelines for CO2 also add pressure and cold hazards that sit outside the Ex marking.

Why not equipment marked IIB?

Hydrogen is group IIC, with a very low ignition energy. Equipment marked only for IIB is not appropriate where hydrogen is present, and a site converting from natural gas to hydrogen may find that handsets bought for the old duty no longer fit the new area classification.

Does the handset work on new sites?

It runs Android 16 under Android Enterprise, so it can be enrolled wherever a console exists.
