Explosion proof mobile phone for Vermilion Energy in Ireland

Corrib is Ireland's only indigenous gas field: a subsea development in the Atlantic, tied back to a processing terminal at Bellanaboy in north Mayo. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms people who decide what may be carried through the terminal gate, and it sets out where an explosion proof mobile phone for Vermilion Energy in Ireland would be used. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is being certified ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at the Corrib gas terminal

Vermilion's own Irish pages describe a field about 83 kilometres off the Mayo coast, in roughly 350 metres of water, with the reservoir some 3,000 metres below the seabed. Gas comes ashore and is processed at the Bellanaboy Bridge gas terminal before entering the Gas Networks Ireland system, and Vermilion says Corrib supplies all of the country's indigenous gas production. It reports more than 100 staff and contractors on the project, and says it took over as operator in 2018. For a handset, the offshore field is out of scope, because no one carries a phone on a subsea template. The relevant classified ground is onshore: the reception and processing plant, the vents and drains around it, and the pipework in between. The hydrocarbon is natural gas, so methane and light condensate drive the classification, and the drawings for each plant area say which gas group and temperature class apply.

Classified units and areas

Inlet reception
Where gas from the pipeline is received, separated and metered.
Gas processing trains
Treatment plant where leaks at flanges, seals and sample points are the classified concern.
Liquids handling
Any liquids separated from the gas, with their own tanks, pumps and drains.
Vents and flare
Pressure relief and venting systems, with zone boundaries that vary by wind and release type.
Utilities and power
Generation, fire water and instrument air serving the process.
Analyser and instrument houses
Small enclosed rooms that are often classified through ventilation rather than distance.

What a remote gas terminal does to a handset

Bellanaboy is a small workforce running a large asset a long way from the nearest industrial estate. That changes what a handset has to do.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A small crew and few spares

A terminal staffed by a modest number of operators cannot afford a person standing idle because a handset died or failed an inspection. The IS-04Z1 is designed so that one device carries the camera, the torch and the voice link, and the 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a whole shift without a charge point inside the classified boundary.

Planned shutdowns with visiting specialists

Maintenance campaigns bring contractors who have never seen the plant. A managed Android 16 device can hold the site directory, the permit application and the isolation checklist, and Android Enterprise policy can restrict a visitor build to those items and nothing else.

Atlantic weather on the outdoor plant

Mayo exposes the plant to rain, wind and damp air for much of the year. IP68 sealing is the answer to the wet; the ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is the answer to the zone, and the temperature class is the figure an instrumentation engineer matches to the gas in the area.

A lone worker a long way from help

Rural terminals have periods with few people on the plant. Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE let a control room see where a lone round-taker is, and a man-down or check-in application can run on the managed Android handset, subject to the site approving it.

Use cases · Bellanaboy

Where the IS-04Z1 would go to work.

Operations01

Process rounds and readings

A round through reception, processing and utilities generates gauge readings, valve line-ups and observations. Entered on one managed handset at the point of the finding, they reach the control room without being copied from a paper sheet an hour later.

Maintenance02

Shutdown work packs

A shutdown scope is organised as numbered work packs with a permit and an isolation behind each. Carrying the pack on a device designed for Zone 1 means the supervisor does not leave the area to look up the next step.

Emergency response03

Muster and drills

During a drill or a real incident, a handset with a position fix and a working radio of its own tells the control room who is where. It also gives the incident controller a camera for what is happening on the ground.

Explosion proof mobile phone questions for Ireland

Does Vermilion publish a vendor approval process for equipment suppliers?

We have not found a public equipment supplier programme for the terminal, so we do not describe one. Ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams what they require, and expect the certificate, the marking, the instructions and the explosion protection documentation to be the starting point.

Does the IS-04Z1 work offshore at the Corrib field?

The design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset use in the open, and the Bellanaboy terminal is the realistic environment on this page. Offshore and subsea scopes are specialised and governed by their own rules, and we do not claim suitability for them.

Is natural gas covered by the IIC target?

Yes. Methane is in a lower gas group than the one targeted, so a handset designed for group IIC covers it. The temperature class and the zone drawn on the site's classification still have to be checked by the site, since that is where the decision is made.

Can the handset be locked down for visiting contractors?

Yes, through the MDM console the site already uses. Because the device runs Android Enterprise, an administrator can restrict applications and features per user group and wipe the device after the contract finishes.
